Usually what I do to stop firing without having to de-power my weapons (thus losing their charge) is press whatever hot key they are (1, 2, etc) and right click any where on the screen. If I don't have much time until they fire, I'll pause, then do it.

The OP was talking about boarding parties, not his or her ship's weapons.

Just because the problem only occurs in an edge case doesn't mean that it isn't a problem.
