Does the game actively avoid giving your ship what it needs?

Post by OnyxShadow »

I've only been playing the game 50 hours or thereabouts so far, but there's been a trend I've noticed. Whatever I need to make the ship I'm using succeed...I can't get it.

The last 2-3 times I've had an Engi A run I couldn't find a drone recovery arm in a dozen or more shops. The last couple times I was putting together a firepower-oriented ship I found a shop with weapons in sector 1, and then didn't get ANY weapons in any shops or events from then on. Yeah, rebel flagship with BL1 and BL 2 and nothing else is a bad time.

So I guess this is mostly a question to those journeymen players with hundreds of hours. Is this the sort of thing I should expect to see in almost every play-through or just an amazing string of bad RNG? Does the game design intentionally troll you?

You seem to have a case of bad luck. It is totally random :)

Instead of intentionally looking for stuff just take what RNG gives you

I try that. Can't take teleport with only engis and zoltan, though. Stuff like that...

It is totally random. :)

We humans have a strong tendency to notice bad luck, but to fail to notice good luck. We consider the latter quite normal. In most likelihood, you were just as lucky and unlucky at various times in the game, but paid more attention to adverse situations.

As others have said, this kind of game is also about making do with what you are given.

I beat the final boss with Zoltan B default weapon + FIRE beam.
Although this is the worst luck ever I play in term of item hunting(Can't find any laser).

And it take a lot minutes to down the most shield to 0 before my fire beam and pike beam able to done something.
Especially phase 1, the boss use cloak to CD all the stacked ion effect.

My favorite run was a Slug A run where the only weapon I got was a Burst Laser 1. I was out of bombs by that point too. It was a ridiculous fight, where I had to Board, beat a crew to the point where they would retreat to the med-bay, the quickly knock down the ship's shields and anti-bio beam the crew before he made it. I lost four crew members and ended up using a human and my slug pilot to actually fight the enemies before I killed the important enemy crew.

i think because of this it always pays off to upgrade in order to multiply the opportunities. instead of waiting for a certain weapon, buy teleporters, cloak, drone control and see what you can make out of it.
