Part of me thought it was a good idea to reset FTL so I could start all over again and grab the ships, achievements, and all that fun stuff all over again. To do this I removed the prof file from /documents/fasterthanlight and relaunched the game. The game now launches, loads, and freezes and crashes.
I have tried removing all local files (from /documents and \Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common) and redownloading the application through steam, same event occurs on launch.
If anyone has any awesome ideas to get it up and running again, that would be excellent
At which point does it freeze? Before the title screen? During the title screen? When you start a new game? Something else?
Also, can you check the stdout.txt and stderr.txt files that you should find in the program folder (same directory as the game executable); if they are not empty, can you post them here?
Finally, can you check the crashlogs subdirectory in the program folder? If there are recent crash logs, can you post them here too?

If you're using Steam, make sure to disable the Steam Cloud (right click on FTL in Steam and go to Properties, then you can uncheck the Cloud functionality in the Updates tab I believe). If somehow your deletion of your profile confused Steam and resulted in a corrupted profile that's stuck in the cloud, then that could cause a freeze on load... and the cloud will continually restore that bad file.

It freezes at on the initial loading screen, prior to the title screen loading up (the load bar gets all the way to the end, then everything explodes). stderr.text and stdout.text are both empty, there is a crashlog directory but it too is also empty.

Disabling the steam cloud, and the steam community, still cause the game to freeze on launch
Interestingly enough I was able to restore my previous prof.sav file into /documents/mygames/fasterthanlight, which now allows the game to launch but with all of my ships and such.
So I guess the question now remains, should it not be generating a new copy of the file by removing it? Although I'm guessing at this point leaving well-enough alone might be a better idea...
Yes it should recreate it. Maybe there is a permission issue on the /documents/mygames/fasterthanlight folder that prevents it from doing so? Have you rebooted your computer recently?

I have full permission for the folders in questions, all folders in fact, so I'm not sure why its not recreating the folder if it is supposed to... I have restarted the computer several times during the process, no dice on it being that simple
I ended up cheating and creating a second user account on the computer, loading up FTL and then copying the contents of /mygames/fasterthanlight from that user account to my main one. It now launches with a blank profile... not too sure why I didn't think of trying that earlier...
