I've not had that happen ever. My guess is you aren't reading the text on the events, as some of those cause you to lose crew.

that's what i had tried to convince myself of. but with my updated post i can replicate this behavior. my best guess is whatever script or etc is used to halve your power in an ion storm in combination with this event (or possibly several events in a nebula) ends up accidentally chewing up the zoltan attached to that power bar

Um, you edited this with more detail since I first posted. The storm event you posted, if you choose to search without a blue option one of the possible outcomes has you lose a crew member. Read the text more carefully (it says something about him being sucked into space after impacting some debris or something.)

dear god I am retarded. I swear I read and reread the event text a dozen times in the past couple hours and somehow utterly failed to see that. it's like when you've lost your keys and search nonstop only to find they were sitting on the damn table in plain sight.

at least i wont fall prey to this ever again :3

well, i at least recognize where i went wrong here. the text is as follows:

While the crew is off the ship searching through the wrecks, two hulls crash into each other breaking the crew's tethers. You have no time to react as someone is knocked away, floating helplessly into the gaseous clouds...

i was selectively reading it as

You have no time to react as one is knocked away

thinking it was referring to one of the ships and not a crewmember.

oh well. feel free to point and laugh
