Game freezes when mousing over button options

Post by Cellidor »

As the title says. The game loads to the title screen fine, but as soon as i move the cursor over any of the menu options, the game appears to freeze completely, but after about...15 seconds or so, it resumes, with my mouse now hovering normally over the option. I tried starting a new game, but this same freeze effected all of the buttons there too. easy/hard, start, ship selectors, everything, it'd make it freeze. It was working fine beforehand, so I'm thinking that it's one of my mods that caused this issue.
I know for a fact that if any did it, it was the "custom ships" mod I was using at the time. Problem is, I can't find out how to -un-do what's been done. I uninstalled the game, turned off steam cloud, removed everything from the steam folder of FTL that remained and anything in the "my games" folder for it, so the profile would be new as well, and ran CCleaner to check for registry issues, if any. After that, I re-installed, saw the message suggesting using the tutorial so i knew it'd be a new file altogether, but it still freezes up, and checking the integrity of the files with steam reveals nothing at this point.

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong? What I should try next?

It's most likely it wasn't the mod you installed. Have you upgraded your drivers, or installed other software since you installed FTL?

None to my knowledge, no. See that's the thing, it -was- working fine. Here's the run-down of what I was testing out:

Altered the "Basilisk" to have all systems and 4 burst laser II's, worked fine
Altered Basilisk to have extra drone spaces, seemed to work fine
Altered Basilisk to have crew of 8 zoltan, 4 engi, 2 crystal and 2 mantis. got to ship select, but going into game caused crash with no error (to my memory).
Re-tried last edit but with 4 zoltan, same thing, crash.
Re-tried last edit with 8 zoltan and none of the other races, game crashed.

It was from this point on that it began to hang-up when mousing over the options. So, I started working backwards from that point to undo it. Change basilisk to normal, remove altered basilisk from mod list, remove other mods from list, check game file integrity, delete all local file and move profile save somewhere else, CCleaner to check registry, complete fresh install, still had the same issue.

So unless my computer updated a graphics driver or the like while that was happening, I don't think that's the cause. In case it is though, somehow, how would I find out where to see the latest installed drivers?

I don't know much about driver versions, unfortunately.

Other ideas:

Do you have two copies of the game installed? Is there a chance you got things mixed up?

Do you use Steam? Maybe it synched some files in its cloud, which are being restored every time you try to unmod them?

I do use steam, but I don't think that would cause two copies to be installed, unless steam somehow managed to do so itself. I know that cloud as been turned off, however, I just neglected to mention that in my previous posts.

As well, I just tested out FTL on my desktop, and it works fine there, which tells me that the steam cloud doesn't seem to be holding a bad file in it's cloud service.

Maybe you could try copying the two .dat files from your desktop? As far as I know, the mod managers only every modify those files.

That's the thing though, if I removed everything from the game when i uninstalled it, it should have removed the .dat files too, which should mean that when i reinstalled it would have gotten them all brand new

Are you the same person that posted on GetSatisfaction and emailed me? Someone else is having a similar problem, odd to have it happen so close in proximity to each other when it never happened before. He didn't mention any mods. Given that you were running the game fine before, it sounds like the mods would have to be at fault... but it also sounds like you did a thorough job cleaning up your Steam installation. Can you send me an email to zasdarq@ftlgame.com with a dxdiag dump and reference this problem?

Sorry about this.

I'm not the same, no, I've never heard of GetSatisfaction.

Odd bit of something to note though. The game appears to be working as it should be now, most curious.

I think I know what the problem was. during all of my thorough cleaning, I never actually thought to restart my computer, which happened at least twice since the last time I've attempted running the game on my laptop, and it's since began working as normal. I only thought to try testing it now since I figured I might as well before getting a dxdiag dump.

So the problem was either because I hadn't restarted the computer, or because modding FTL often requires that one program "FTLDat", which I had awhile back uninstalled without testing to see if it had fixed things (it was late when I finally uninstalled FTLDat, so I put off testing the game again at the time, you see). FTLDat was something I'd forgotten about uninstalling when I first had issues, since It was in it's own install folder, so it could have caused some of the issues.

Computers, eh, how do they work?
