Re-Buying the Game?

Post by RedMser »

I have just heard about this game and the first thing I did is buy it on steam - without me knowing that there was a DRM-Free Linux-Compatible version out there! I am using windows, but my brother has linux! And sence he is interested in this game aswell, I would like to know if there is a way to get the DRM-Free version sence you HAVE bought the game already.

Legally speaking, two people playing the game you should buy two copies. The lack of DRM doesn't mean "free to install for as many people as you want". Buy a second copy. (And, you currently only can get the Linux version from the Humble Store distribution, which is the one sold on ftlgame.com [rather than through GOG.com or Steam ].

Welcome to the forum RedMser. I am not qualified to say for sure what is or isn't legal, but i'm pretty sure that most publishers are ok with one game being shared around the household. Afterall a physical copy can be shared so why not a digital download? What's the point of buying games if you can't play and share them with friends/family.
However, a physical copy can only be played on one machine at one time, and without DRM there is no such limitation on digital downloads. Letting a family member play your game when you are not playing it sounds fair to me, but making copies for everyone is abuse.

In the end, people who refuse to buy software will (almost) allways find a way to play illegaly, and people who are willing to pay, allways will. Sometimes paying well above asking price just to reward well made games.

In your current situation, you should purchase the game from Humble Store / ftlgame.com since Steam and GOG do not offer a Linux version. Yet. Maybe wait untill Steam gets a Linux version out?

Change Steam (Windows/Mac) and Linux to PC and Console and you'll see an example of why they should buy their own copy. Change brother to 2nd computer with Linux, and it would seem acceptable (in my head) to get a Linux code. Access to multiple versions from buying somewhere specific doesn't make it so that you should be able to hand out your "extras". It only makes it reasonable for you to use it on whichever OS(s)/Computers you might own.

-Have multiple computers with different OSs on them? You shouldn't have to buy another copy.

-Have a second person who has a separate computer with a different (or even the same) OS? They should buy their own copy.

Buying from the site is supposed to be a one size fits all kind of purchase, not a friends and family pack.
