Should I?

Post by Zorder »

Hello there, I've wanted to buy the game for a while but since I don't own a very good PC and my monitor only supports 1024x768 resolution I hesitated. But, I recently heard there's a beta version of FTL on Steam which enables users with a resolution lower than 1280x720 to play the game "decently". In advance here's my system specs: Windows XP, Pentium Dual Core E5300 2.60 Ghz, 3GB RAM and sadly I have an Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset Family.
Best Regards, Z

Hopefully when the patch hits the humble site I can give you a better impression of how it runs for me on low-end. Right now it's hard to tell. Have seen reports of not being able to run under the minimum stated resolution, though. So it will probably vary from machine to machine.

Maybe wait for the demo and see if it runs first?

Well I was waiting for the demo but the more I watched vids of people playing it the more I grew impatient about it :) Is there an ETA for the demo?

I haven't seen one. I presume Matthew is working on bug fixes first to get the game stable, then we'd see the demo builds. It doesn't sound trivial to get them out unfortunately.

Well I'll keep my eye open in that case for the demo and people with low-spec machines and then I'll make my decision, either way thanks!

Frankly, if you are not able to display a 1280x720 resolution on your monitor, I would be wary of buying the game.

Even after the steam beta patch, none of the changes helped me fix the resolution on my 1024x768 computer. I play it on my widescreen laptop now.

But even when I was playing it on my desktop, it was still quite enjoyable to play even when having to drag the screen left and right. If that doesn't appeal to you, then I wouldn't suggest buying it.

Hopefully the devs will have a better solution in the future.

The patch lets me play it! :D Just barely, though. There's a touch of mouse lag, probably due to frame rate, but it is playable so far.

So that's promising.

Zorder we did not remove the minimum requirement because the workaround does not work for many computers. Netbooks/older computers just don't tend to have the necessary functionality from OpenGL.

If you purchase the game directly from the website, treat it as a demo and I'll refund your money immediately if it doesn't work out for you. I hope that's helpful for now.
