Sector Map Generation

Post by Sacrificial Toast »

I don't know if this really counts as a bug, but it is definitely an issue. Some of the maps can be generated in a very poor manner, where the exit can only be reached if you go a certain way at the beginning, and you can't tell what jumps can be made unless you're on the node in question.

For example:

I've had one case today where I couldn't get across Sector 4. There was a gaping chasm in between the start and the end. :(

I couldn't take a screenshot at each one, I didn't have enough fuel.

One solution may be to reveal which nodes that node is connected to upon mouseover of that node.
If this is a game element, just make it possible to get across somehow and say "it's possible, you're just too dumb to figure it out :U"

Is there any chance you saved your game when this happened? I know the developers were looking for save files containing any maps with inaccessible exits, since their code wasn't supposed to allow those to exist anymore.

To the OP: The "nodes connected to this star" UI enhancement has been suggested numerous times, and I'd assume is either under serious discussion or possibly even already being worked on (but has not been publicly confirmed or denied - there's just been a lot of comments about that). The sector generation that ends with the C-shape like your screenshot showed, however, isn't a flaw - it's still possible (though certainly not "safe" or "easy") to backtrack through rebel controlled space, so it ends up being more of a risk/reward calculation - do you travel through the dense but disconnected area to the south to get more weapons/shops/scrap, and have to fight your way back through the rebels, or do you forgo the rewards and go to the guaranteed exit? Either one is a valid option, depending on your current ship strength/abilities.

Unfortunately, I spent my fuel trying to get to the lower end, and then decided to see how long I could last in the rebel-controlled space.

I don't know the nature of how FTL saves. If it deletes a saved game after I die, then this file won't contain the data you're looking for.
The ship in which this occurred was called 'The Golem', and it is the last session I did under that ship's name in which it occurred.

Unfortunately not - that file just contains your high score list, unlocked ships and achievements. An actual saved game would require instead you to have chosen "save and quit" and then have the file "continue.sav". Unfortunately, most people wouldn't know this ahead of time, so it's not a huge deal that you don't have it.
