Fraps slows my FPS

Post by Aryix »

Hey there, I just wanted to ask for some help. My frames when fraps isn't recording is anywhere between 75-200fps, but as soon as fraps records it bombs down to 10. It's kinda bad considering that the game runs by frames, so it's extremely juttery.
System Specs:

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
System Manufacturer: Acer
System Model: Aspire 5733
System Type: x64-based PC
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 370 @ 2.40GHz, 2399 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 6.00 GB
Total Physical Memory: 5.68 GB
Available Physical Memory: 3.66 GB
Total Virtual Memory: 11.4 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 8.41 GB
Page File Space: 5.68 GB

Graphics Card:
Intel(R)HD Graphics
Core (i3)
1760mb memory.
Please help!

Fraps inherently gives a performance hit on any system running any game. If its giving you such a large hit to your FPS then your PC isn't powerful enough to do both at once, no amount of game optimising will make a significant impact. Try lowering the resolution you capture at (Set it to half). As annoying as I'm sure this is, its not really the developers problem

EDIT:
Having said that I've just properly read your post and it seems you should easily be able to do both...

He's running an intel integrated chipset which is undoubtedly the worst GPU family available.

Fraps has a very large hit on GPU performance. Seeming as your running such a low end GPU its hardly surprising that you lag with fraps running.

But the thing is, I can run Awesomenauts and stuff like that with fraps recording with no problem, It's just FTL. :?

I've not played awesomenauts but different games may use your GPU differently effecting your recording performance in different ways.

My personal favourite free screen recorder is MSI afterburner, I get far better recording performance with that than I did with fraps, however I am running a dedicated GPU so the performance hit for me is neglible.

So, long story short, there is nothing I can do short of buying a better laptop?

If you are a Steam user, have you tried version 1.02 beta? It's designed to fix issues (notably graphical issues) people were having with the initial release, and adds several options to tune the way the game uses the graphic card (notably V-sync). Maybe one of these options will make fraps better cohabit with the game?
