Benifits of killing the crew?
Are there any benifits to wiping out the enemy crew? Do you get more scrap and items for doing less damage to the enemy hull and systems

The less hull damage and system/sub-system damage the more scrap you get and the more increased chance of getting a new weapon.

Well, no not exactly. You can peer through the data files and see what the results are. Generally, capturing a ship gives you one level higher of a reward (ranked from low, medium and high) than destroying it would. The rewards for destruction are completely independent of the damage done to the ship.

Instead of geting a random crew member when getting a slaver scum to surrender, when their crew is dead, you can choose what guy you want.

If you kill the crew instead of blowing the ship up, you generally get a lot more scrap and a high chance of either finding weapons or crew members. The most effective way to kill their crew is through boarding parties. In my most recent win with the Kestrel, I had a Mantis/Human boarding crew and they ripped the arms off everything, we got so many free crew members and weapons from the successful boardings that I had maxed out shields, weapons, drones, stealth, and reactor, on top of all level 3 subsystems. The final boss was so easy I couldn't even believe it, and I was carrying more weapons than I could even use.

Aye. Even if you get the rare event where the slavers don't surrender (thus killing all the slaves), if you win via killing their crew, you find a random slave hiding in the walls, so it still allows you to get a crew member when you otherwise wouldn't have.Moldevort wrote:Instead of geting a random crew member when getting a slaver scum to surrender, when their crew is dead, you can choose what guy you want.

I think it's also possible that killing the crew results in you not getting any crew member at all. I forgot if the slaves got killed in the crossfire or if they were executed by the slavers.Vid-szhite wrote:Aye. Last saw this in beta though so it might have changed / been removed.

1. None of the slaves survived
2. Most of the slaves died except for one survivor you find hiding in the walls.
3. All the slaves survive and you get to choose one of 3 different races
I'm not sure whether it has to do with how much you damage the ship before capturing it. At one point the only damage I did was taking down a zoltan energy shield yet all the slaves still died.

There's no way in the current system for the game to make determinations based upon how much damage you've done. It just chooses between the three options when you kill all the crew (giving you 2/3 odds of getting a crewmember), vs only the first two for blowing up the ship (giving you only 1/2 odds of getting a crewmember, and 0% chance of choosing the species).hborrgg wrote:The three different outcomes I've come across are

Re: Benifits of killing the crew?
Hello, first post here so excuse my noobism.
I've found interesting way to kill crew with Torus ship.
Basically You use Your EMP to choke other guy by constantly pummeling his air system (also shields by occasion).
Also it's smart to power up Your engines for better evade (You don't need drones anyway so You have 1 unused energy with med bay flipped on).
One thing - be sure other guy don't have any shield bypassing weapons.
I did this in first fight (Rock Slavers) and while it took for-freaking-ever (like 5-10 minutes) to kill them, I've did it; getting slave ("hidden" one), some decent scrap (enough to buy lvl. 2 shield and fix minor damage Ie'v took) and leveling my guys (gunner was halfway yellow level (!!!), shield was nearly green and half green pilot).
Oh and You get achievement for that (suffocate crewmen).
This work especially well vs. most of Zoltan ships since they often have lasers/beams and they die faster than other races (unless there are some other aliens).
Also those prolonged fights are STUPIDLY EFFICIENT way to level up Your crew (I had 5 guys in sector 2, guns maxed on all, 2 max shielders, pilots and engine maintenance mixed amongst crew.).
