[SHIP][WIP] The Translocator - Federation Boarding Ship

The Translocator

The Translocator is a Boarding ship made by the Federation. It has advanced teleporters, but no real weapons, except a single Ion Blast.

Pros and cons
+ 2 Rock, 2 Human and 1 Mantis crewmen
+ Long-ranged Scanners Augmentation
+ Maximum upgraded teleporter
+ Cloaking
+ Alternate Layout (WIP, link: http://imgur.com/bfBBFqJ)

= Only air vent is in the teleporter room
- No gibs (yet..)
- Maybe a bit OP? (5 crewmen, cloaking, etc.)
- Miniship and description don't fit in their tiny little boxes (yet).


Requirements etc.
- Slipstream Mod Manager 1.2 or higher
- This mod replaces 'The Osprey'. If you have not unlocked this ship yet, download a save file with all ships unlocked here: http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2110, along with instructions on how to use it.

Hey there FictionalFridge

Sweet ship you did there! :)

The hull is simple but fitting. Really nothing to criticizes there. Well done! :) The only thing that comes to my mind is that it is very obvious from what it has been spliced. You could add some details to make it a little more unique (antenna? more panels/hatches?).

Edit/ Just noticed the the left side of the Kestrel part has line of shading that does not continue on the bomber part. Could be removed to make the shading look more organic/uniform. ;)

Gameplay wise:
I immediately though of a human only boarding ship when I read the title. A four person teleporter will make any ship very strong. But the current starting crew basically has you settled for the whole game already. IMO giving the ship four boring humans would give it a nice unique touch, cause you would be forced to exercise mass boarding with weaker combatants, something no vanilla ship besides the Slug B does. This also would give the player more to do during the game, cause he/she can still strive to get a better boarding crew.

I also don't think it needs a neither long range scanner, upgraded teleporter or cloaking. Again, other than upgrading shields and engines, the player wont have much to think of when running this ship.

On the other hand, the Ion blast alone does not help it to accomplish anything. Two of these might be more adequate. An alternative could be no weapons but a defense drone, but that Basilisk style is sooooo 2012...

Maybe the med bay could move a little to the front as well? Not everything has to be streamlined perfectly. Just a thought of course. I actually like the layout a lot, it conveys the function nicely. I also like the name. Fed player ships are usually named after birds, but I could not come up with any teleporter related bird so Translocator is fine I guess. :D

We don't know yet how AE will effect system distribution aboard the ship, but you might need some additional rooms to have space for the three new systems. Not a big problem, there is still space beside engines and doors.



On a side note: Can we really only relate to the Feds? Feels like there are much more Federation ships made than vessels for the other factions. :D

Hey Sleeper Service! Thanks for your reply!

To be honest with you, I never really thought I'd be releasing this mod any time soon.. :P The only reason I've placed it here on the forums is to check if there was any demand for Federation boarding vessels.

You're absolutely right about the scanners, teleporter and cloaking though. As I said in the original post, I do think it's a bit OP, but then again, I actually like being OP sometimes :D I have no idea what to do with the Ion Blast/No Weapons/Drone dilemma, maybe you could give me some tips etc. on that subject.

I was going to give it only human crewmen only, so that's why the Medbay is right next to the Teleporter Room: humans don't have a lot of health so you can heal immediately when necessary. I think 1 Engi and 2 Humans would be less OP, so I think I'm going to go with that.

The layout was kinda just a concept though. I really like the Federation Bomber but the snub helm didn't really do it for me :P, so I added the Kestrel's helm but I didn't realize I forgot to remove the shading...

Again, thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. This is my first (real) mod, and also the first time posting here, so it's always nice to get a warm welcome here!

(and yes, there are way to much Fed ships on the forums.. but have you seen a Fed Boarding ship yet? ;) )

Yes. I just made one last week. It is the Type B in my Heavy Assault mod that is just a few posts down from here, at least at the time of this post. However, it lost it's medbay in anticipation of a clone bay and had the wrong crew assigned to it. :lol: I don't know yet how well it will play out.
