So are the "B" layouts like an added difficulty?

Or are they just different? The Vortex (Engi B) is a super neat concept, but I found it was pretty hard to play. Once an enemy had 2 shields it was SOL.

Same with the Fed Cruiser B, I just found it to be that much harder. The only one I have found to be comparable or easier is the Red-Tail, which rocks.

Yeah that's what I figured. After I posted I did a little bit more research, and it seems (for example) that the Stealth Ship B is more popular than the A for example. And I really like the Red-Tail over the Kestrel.

B layouts aren't specifically harder, just different. They're different playstyles.

E.g. Slug cruiser A is better suited to taking down shields than killing the crew with Anti-Bio beam.
Slug cruiser B is better suited to sending across boarding teams and killing their crew in hand to hand.

Pretty much just find one that suits your playstyle. You might find some B fits harder if they're not 'you'.

Not really harder, depends on the ship, like Kestrel B is (In my opinion) easier and superior to the A type as you get two humans, a zoltan and a mantis.
Personal fleet: Kestrel A & B, Engi A&B, Stealth A, Mantis A&B, Federation A&B, Slug A, Rock A, Zoltan A&B and Unidentified A.

Rock Cruiser Layout B has no outside doors, and no door control. It has a fire bomb, and a single shot laser. No crew teleporter. So the only way it's possible to damage opponents is to... Set the shield control on fire, then shoot? And pray to god they don't have enough people to put the fire out in time?

I'm seriously wondering if the ship would be better off with a hull breach in the middle of it to vent O2. It's terrible ship design when blasting a huge hole in the middle would be an improvement.

The Rockmen are immune to fire and have 150 health. Why is using a weapon on yourself the only option? Just go kill the intruders. The rock ship layouts tend to have manned stations close to other things, so speed is not that big of a deal.

The B layouts are different enough to be different ships. I tend to like the B layouts better.

The best tactic against invaders is to open the external doors and let oxygen vent out of the entire ship except for the medbay, and then fight the invaders in there. This is impossible with Rock Cruiser B so you need to fight them where they want to be or have them run around wrecking systems until it is the medbays turn. A Mantis will still beat a Rockman in a one on one fight, so the only way a Rockman team will beat a Mantis team is either bring the fight to the medbay (letting invaders wreck every system on the way), or set off a Fire Bomb in the middle of the room. Invaders will not attack a room with no subsystem, which means the second option is still going to be damaging to your own ship.

Also, I take back what I said about needing to purposely maintain a hull breach; no door control means you can't control oxygen loss beyond the room with the breach.

They also can't power their starting weapons simultaniously, for some reason; I don't have all of the ships unlocked yet but this is the only ship that I've seen it happen on so far (Even the Red-Tail starts with an extra weapons level to accommodate the four lasers)

The short version is, they can't attack other ships very well so they won't earn much scrap to be able to buy what will make them functional. I'm not sure if Door Control can be bought later, but until it turns up in a shop then a Mantis invasion is almost an automatic death sentence. The ship just doesn't work.

The Rock B's ship laser has "Shield Pierce 1". So you automatically beat every shield 1 ship by just repeat firing on it's weapons. You do in fact need another weapon by the time you find 2 shields, but that goes for every ship nearly.

Also, once you get another weapon level, firebombing the damaged weapon system... bahahahahha. BURRRRRNN. BUUUUUUURNNN.
