Help!

Post by Zadeinator »

Hello FTL players, I have downloaded a ship creation mod, and I was wondering, can someone give me a tutorial on how to make/edit a ship skin? Also, what program do I use? It's not that much of an ask, I hope I get a response... and if you do respond, thank you in advance!

1) it isn't a ship creation mod, it is a program.

2) you want to change the hull image for the ship? well for the editor, assuming it's superluminal, you should change it to the one you desire... If your asking what program you need to make your own image, GIMP, Photoshop, nearly any art program can do it.

I hope I helped , your help request doesn't really make to much sense due to some wording choice.

You should read the instructions of use a tutorial or video to help you use Superluminal or your program of choice.

Thank you for helping me in my predicament, I have successfully set up GIMP, however I may or may not need a basic tutorial of sorts, you don't suppose you could tell me how to get started, eh?

Okay, firstly tell me what exactly you want to do (and possibly why) and I can tell you the specifics.

From what you told me you want to replace the ship hull image, you just doing a recolour?

if so click "hull" which should be near the upper right. select your recoloured image you made and tadda.

if it is a completely different hull and you do not want to change around the rooms and stuff then get the image you want that fits unless your really not to fussy if rooms stick of the ship, you will need a new cloak image as well (and shield if it's to small). All you have to do then is go to file then export into a .ftl and then patch your mod in with SMM like any other.

OK, I have downloaded FTLEdit, I wish to either make my own or combine the ship skins found within the game, that is just about it as I can place the rooms using FTLEdit wherever I please, why? Because I saw a guy making some extra ships and he made a skin using combined Federation ship parts and it looked AWESOME, so I want to make my own and incorporate it into the game.

Well sorry then, I can't help you there, I use Superluminal.
And the term your looking for is hull, I think skin can be confused with a number of things in FTL. It doesn't seem like the normal term here.

How ever to make your own hull pic you need an art program, Gimp is free to use and that's what I use and others. And the term for taking parts of ships and putting them together is sliced I think it is. For eg look at this ship I made...

(Warning, don't use other peoples hulls without permission ;) )

Yes, that is all good, I have GIMP and stuff, I'll go install superluminal instead and see if it installs correctly, if/when it does, I'll ask you for a tutorial perhaps (on slicing, I mean)?

Ok, it has installed properly, now, how do I slice?

I would be glad to help you out. (there is no specific tutorial on how to do it, but it does involve cutting tools and such and also what ever you like to use to even things out and stuff etc and recolouring)

But I am in New Zealand and I have to go to bed now. Maybe ask around and see if anyone else can help ya. I can't remember but I think UltraMantis made a thread somewhere mentioning or about this. Don't hate me if my memory is wrong. Good Day/ Night / Evening/ Afternoon and good luck!

Ok, loved that Truman reference at the end, funny thing is, I'm Aussie, hi neighbour!

EDIT: Graagagagghh, I can't figure out how to slice, no internet tutorials, no tips on GIMP itself, nothing...

pretty much it's using the cutting tool to get parts of the ship and put it onto your one.

It is reasonably an 'easy' thing to do and self explanatory but different settings for cutting and some custom 'filler' for some parts is required, I am not the best at gimp as of yet but I am not that bad (I am a traditional artist, not digital).
