Custom ship system room graphics?

Post by Kiloace »

Where can I find the graphics for the system rooms (pilot, sensors, shields, engines, etc.) in the resource.dat files of FTL? And is there anything I should keep in mind while making custom room graphics?

The room graphics can be found in img/ship/interior. Room graphics can only be assigned to rooms with systems. If you make them very different in general then empty rooms will stand out quite strongly cause these will remain plain and white.

This post explains where the resources are stored: http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 767#p44766

And this tool will help you unpack the graphics, and replace them with your creations. Once you are satisfied with your work, you should create an SMM compatible mod for release.

In addition to Sleeper Service's advice, pay close attention to typos in blueprints or filenames, it's very easy to crash the game.
There's also computer console glows. They are not very easy to make, so if you can try to position your custom consoles in such a way that you can use existing glows. Glows were not created for every position and orientation of consoles though. If you or anyone else needs extra glows, there are a few in my Marauders mod. Feel free to use those. There's only 2 or 3 new ones.

Hey guys! Many thanks. A lot of progress has been made since this original post. Now, the only problem I am having is getting it to show my custom interiors. I have tweaked the layout of a few vanilla room interiors to fit my ship layout, and they seem to show up fine in the superluminal editor, but something quirky happens in the actual game.

I have edited the interior for my engine room, med-bay and shields. For the engine room, the graphic seems to "default" to the glow image instead of the actual room image. In the medbay, there is no graphic at all, and I am assuming that something similar to the engine will happen to the shield room (the ship starts without a shield system, so I can't tell in game.) The correct graphics are included in the img folder, but I can't help but think this is a link problem. Do I need to include interior images in a subfolder in the img folder? Should I check the wording in the XML file? :?

I've found that sometimes when you make custom room images, the picture won't show up, and you can fix it by editing it again and making sure the edges of the picture have nothing on them (are transparent).

@Kiloace
Room interiors go to img/ship/interior, so that's probably why they "defaulted" to glow in-game :P
