Ship Visual Help

Post by NewAgeOfPower »

Been trying to use Gimp & Paint.net, but I'm unable to create entirely new art. Looking for an artist to help me create ship art for my mod. Here's one of the concept ships, hand-drawn.

Image

I've tried making it and other designs in Paint/GIMP/Paint.net, and everything looks like garbage. Looking for someone who has more artistic skill/ability to use image manipulation programs to help me.

I'm a poor man and therefore unable to offer up anything other than some of the doodad's I've mashed up;

Artillery Room / Weapons Room

Just add me the credits if you guys want to use these. Anyone is welcome to use the given doodads I've created.

Bah. I'll release one of my more vanilla-ey mods this weekend, in hopes of getting attention for my main course.

Said tons of times, its not easy to design a ship in photoshop, gimp or paint.net, its far easier to use a 3d modelling program like sketchup, specially the design you posted in the first post, once u learn how to use skecthup (lets say a few hours of learning..) u can make fast designs without worrying of your creations looking like crap. Yes, sketchup is a 3d program, but it is focused on architecture, this means space ships are a really great option to design in it. The only thing you need besides learning how to make basic 3d models, is a pack of textures, that u apply on the model and voilá, screenshot of the topview and u have a decent ship design. But of course, your will need imagination, since a space ship need to look like an space ship, not like a tank..

BTW, i see you copied the designs of the Vulcan ships from Star Trek xD, yea they are a really good option and great designs, keep it going!.

P.D.: I can even give you some designs of the Vulcans, maybe u will get some ideas or u can just make a modifyied version of them. Let me know and i post em here (they are for public use, i downloaded them from xartris scientia and like all the images there, they have free public use aprobal. The original source is drex files, but since xartris scentia only have public galleries, we can say thats ok).

That would be nice. I've installed sketchup make, and instead of cleaning up my mods I've been familiarizing myself with Sketchup -.-

Thats good. I recommend you to visit some sketchup forums to gather some interesting plugins (little programs that u install on sketchup and they makes things a lot easier and allow you to design more complex models). If you still need the vulcan ships images, let me know.

Seriously it should not take more than a day max for you to learn how to make basic models, sketch up is really straight forward. Good luck.

Gave it a go, since it was a reasonably simple shape. You're on your own for gibs, I'm afraid, but carving the ship up should be the easy part (and kitbashing some stock debris in).

Regarding sketchup, it's not a bad tool to learn I suppose, but I'll be honest (and speedoflight, no offense intended), I don't care much at all for the appearance. The Omicron ships have a very unique look, but feel very out of place in FTL, at least to me.

As far as Photoshop goes (or GIMP), all that's really required is to import your sketch, make a new layer, then trace over it with a 1px brush to get the outline. Can be a little time-consuming, I suppose, but it's not a terribly difficult process. After that, it's just a matter of playing around with the right gradients (and I grant you, I didn't spend a great deal of time with the above concept, could probably smooth it out a lot more if I were more careful).

All art from my mods is at your disposal, unelss i scribbled something else in the license. Interior rooms will probably be of little use but some glows may come in handy as the vanilla game does not have all rotations or positions. Weapon art may be more usefull.

G'luck with your modding adventure, and congratz on your first win (?) :)

I suposse it is a question of taste, i personally dont like any mod that has a crappy ship hull design in it, because that is an important part of the mod. Omicron ships are different, since they need to be as flat as possible to make the design of them easier (its really hard to design me, trust me), still i designed them with a little depth. But i could make totally different designs, like just the ftl ship styles. But i never liked the vanilla graphic styles, so i really dont care about the mod not having the style of the vanilla ships. Its a question of taste.

And yes, the design you showed up made on photoshop is easy, i can do it as well in about 5 minutes, but it looks a little crap for me. I suposse you will add more details, like windows or power cores, right?

I'm not adding or changing anything really, I was just completing the ship from the concept, as it was provided. What NAOP decides to do with it from here (tweaking/adding/changing) is completely up to him. I agree it's a little bland, and honestly I could've done a much better job smoothing out the gradients and whatnot.
