[SOLVED] Pixely / Blurry font?

Post by xff42 »

Hey community.

I was installing FTL on my Desktop PC with older hardware (3GHZ Singlecore, 128 MB Graphics (Radeon 9600), 1,5GB Ram) and its running fine (as it should, no problem til here).

But the problem I have is, that the texts which are written in the buttons where the Pixleart Font is used (within the dialoug screen the text is shown fine) is not displayed correctly (somehow blurry?). I was trying out different resolutions and video option combinations (different resolutions on full- and windowed-screen).

Its not only in the ship-selection screen its also ingame while playing a round of FTL. I just took this screenshot because it was fast to make.

Is someone else experiencing the same?
Btw: its only on my Desktop PC, on my Laptop (2,2 GHz Dual Core, 4 GB Ram, 2 GB Graphics) its running without these problems there it looks fine - as it should.

I hope someone can help me because its playable but its not fun playing like this (I cant read certain buttons like "Dismiss" :P )

Thanks in advance

P.S: I posted this already on the gog ftl subforum - because I bought FTL on gog.com. But noone could help me there - therefore I came here to post it.

Add the line

swapTexture=1

to the file "settings.ini" which can be found in your FTL installation folder. That should get you cleared up.

I just searched for a file called "settings.ini" and I don't have it in the FTL install folder. In fact, no file with that name was found anywhere on my machine (Windows 7).

Any idea why I wouldn't have it?

I think you may not be searching correctly. That's a very common file name. I have 20 on my C: drive, including the one for FTL.

MIne's in c:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Faster Than Light\
My Videos - MY MOD HUB
Simo-V - The Potential - Automated Scout - "Low O2" Icons
The Black Opal - The Asteroid - The Enforcer - The Pyro

Right click on the shortcut that starts FTL and select Propertis from the menu.
Look for a line that says Target (it should end with: ...FTLGame.exe") That shows you where FTL is installed. You may also find the option Open File Location to open it directly in Explorer. In the same folder with FTL.exe, you will find settings.ini.

Open it with Notepad and edit as explained in previous posts. Svae changes and run FTL as normal.

Thanks for the information.

I was able to find another thread where the issue of the missing settings.ini file was covered (in the later versions of the game this file is not created, you have to run FTL as Admin to get it to appear).

Then I had to figure out how to edit the settings.ini file, since it's owned by the Admin and you can't edit it (open Notepad as Admin and then open the file).

I added the line:
swapTexture=1

At first I thought the display had improved slightly, but a lot of the font is still illegible, and the images have jaggy aliasing.

I just ran the game in Linux, and saw for the first time that the word "customize" appears under each crew member. This is totally illegible when I run the game in Windows 7.

(The display I'm experiencing is exactly like the screenshot posted by the orginator of this thread.)
I'm wondering if I have to play FTL as Admin in order for it to use the updated settings.ini file...I'll try it when I get home.

Any other ideas for improving the display in Windows 7?

Yep, I just ran the game as Admin and sure enough the fonts and graphics are sharp.

So it looks like that settings.ini file, which is only created when you run the game as Admin, is also only used when you run the game as Admin.

The real problem is that it considers me a different user, so it starts with none of the unlocked ships or achievements/badges.

I'm going to see if I can create a version of the settings.ini file that does not use the same permissions as the one created when running the game as Admin.

So it turns out the the entire FTL folder has security settings that make read-only for all non-Admin users. Not sure why that would be necessary.

I tried changing the permissions on the folder, files and subfolders, but after giving all users on the machine full control of the folder, it still doesn't use the settings.ini file when I run it under a non-Admin user.

The file is there, it's not read-only, but it's being ignored unless I run FTL as Admin.
