How do I get to fight last boss?
When I enter the LAST STAND sector, I am unable to control the movement of my ship. On odd turn I seem to have no option except to wait. On even turns my jump destination seems to be randomly determined. After a dozen turns or so the game declares I have lost, without a fight taking place.

Your ship starts on the right side, at the Federation Base. You'll see the same ship outline as you always see. You might be looking at the BOSS ship as it's jumping towards the federation? I'm terribly sorry about the confusion.

This got me the first time I played till I really looked hard at the map.
It is logical that the boss ship would come from the direction the rebel fleet is coming from and you would go back to engage the mother ship.
