The key to beating normal is being conservative with resources. Early on when each point of hull costs 2 scrap, fuel 3, missile costs 6 - you shouldn't be spending these fast enough to where you need to buy them often from shops in sector 1-3.

At the start of the game I try not to spend a single scrap before I reach the 70 mark, then I upgrade to 2 shield bars as soon as possible. I don't buy fuel or repair my ship before I get 70 scrap! This cuts back on hull damage in sector 2, that way you stay ahead of the scrap curve. Next target is usually Defense Drone I because Normal has so many missiles, or if I can find one I will opt for a good module. Stuff like teleport, cloak etc. all comes later.

Another thing 2 shields gives you is training vs. any 2 laser using enemy. Just go AFK 5 minutes, he can't get through your shield and your crew is now has free experience.

So to put it in perspective, a good Kestrel leaves Sector 1 with 2 shield, +5 evasion and +29 shield recharge. It's no guaranteed win but it's little things like this which all add up.
