Working on something-But need help on one thing.

I was working on a mod that would replace most of the enemies with different ships,BUT.They looked odd,off,and like they didnt belong in FTL.I made the sprites using the BSF ship maker,and cutting them out using GIMP,so they didnt look fitting.What im wondering about is how does everyone get their ships looking similar to FTL ships,its not hard to tell most of them are cutting pieces of other ships and putting them on new ones,but how do you do that correctly without messing up horribly,or did you download a pack or something?
