Another Stupid Question!
How do I install a mod if I have to extract it and it comes out as .xml, not .ftl?

Okay, to elaborate, I wanted to use the "Duality" ship mod and the Descent Into Darkness mods. I downloaded where the links said to, and got a .rar file. I extracted them, and instead of .ftl files, which can easily be dropped into Slipstream, I got .xml files. I'm not sure where I went wrong.

I just looked at those two mods, and they come in .ftl format. There is no reason for you to have a .rar file.

When extracting from a .rar, make sure nothing is highlighted, so all files will be extracted, or you'd only get the one file.

Every time I download it, I get a .rar file. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I run Windows 7 and the latest Internet Explorer, if that helps.

*Facepalm*
It's not a stupid question, but it is stupid that noone's showed up who knows the (obvious) answer. All .ftl files are just normal compressed files (containing the .xml stuff and images that make a mod work) with their .whatever renamed to .ftl because why not.
For whatever reason, your computer is automatically changing the name to .rar which shouldn't happen. I used to have that problem, but I don't remember how I fixed it. I would recommend posting in the Slipstream thread to get help. You might be able to just use the .rar files with Slipstream, or if that doesn't work you might be able to rename the file to .ftl but I think there's some option I had to change to make that work right.

Specifically, .ftl are renamed zip files. An important thing to note, even though zip and rar are both compressed archive type files, they do not use the same compression algorithm. For example, if a mod was packed using rar's algorithm, and then renamed to .ftl, SMM will not be able to install it.
@SgtFrog
IIRC this is an issue with Internet Explorer, however I don't recall what the solution was...
That said, it would be easier, and with more benefit for you and your computer, to get a different browser, like Firefox, Chrome or Opera -- they are universally considered to be superior to IE in every regard.

Re: Another Stupid Question!
The real question here is: why are you using Internet Explorer and not one of the many much, much better browsers? Switching to Firefox, Chrome, etc. and seeing if the problem still occurs is the only solution I can think of.SgtFrog wrote:Sorry!xlandar wrote:uhhh, this is a bit of a vague question, elaborate please.
