At last!

Post by The Enemy »

I played my first game of FTL in February of this year. Tonight, 378 games later, I am pleased to report that I FINALLY have at least one win with each version of every ship in the game. I have 51 wins overall, for a pretty shameful winning percentage of 13%, but on the other hand it wasn't till fairly recently that I really got some of the intricacies of the game. For the last couple of months, my win percentage has been more like 70%.

I closed it out on a Rock B on my 5th run with the ship -- oddly enough, the *first* time I had not picked up a transporter and played it as a boarding ship. I got a Burst Laser II and a Heavy Laser I in the first sector that worked with the Heavy Pierce so well that I decided to forget firebombing and go for a direct damage plan. In Sector 2 I picked up a free Breach Missile, and Sector 3 I bought a Weapon Pre-Igniter.

Once I upgraded weapons systems enough to use all my toys at once, it was a brutal offense -- a first-second breach missile into their shields immediately followed by 7 points of laser damage to their weapons pretty much instantly crippled everything I faced. I also had a Scrap Recovery Arm, which didn't exactly hurt.

Later on I picked up a Burst Laser I and a Hull Laser I and went straight laser spam, which easily carried me through the boss, no drones or teleporter needed -- and I ended up with my second highest-score ever (5297) and over 30 drones and 50 missiles still in my back pocket. It was quite a satisfying way to get the last win :D

Weirdly, I got the Crystal ship *months* before I unlocked my last ship, the Slug. I went out of my way not to spoil myself on how to unlock ships and had no idea the Crystal ship was as rare as it is until I started reading forums. I eventually had to break down on the Slug ship unlock, though, because the game goes out of its way to stress how untrustworthy Slugs are, so every single time a Slug begs for its life I kill it just to be on the safe side. Apparently not a good strategy for unlocking the ship.

Even though Slug was the last ship I got, Rock was the last ship I won with because I get super frustrated with how slowly they move. Faster Than Light, my ass.

Anyway, I just had to share with people who would actually understand why tonight is the greatest night of my life. I can now go into Advanced Edition with my head held high!

Nice. I've played my first FTL game early as you did, but it was only a few months ago that I actually won... And before that, I had unlocked all the ships. Won with a Basilisk. However, I have gotten to the end fight with all ships. From the Vortex to the Carnelian, I've reached the flagship at least once. However, that was the first time I was playing with the Basilisk, so it quickly became a favourite of mine. I see what you mean, though, once you get by boarding it's pretty damn easy to forget that your weapons are also there.
Also, how the fuck did you win with the DA-SR12? Getting a Weapon Pre Igniter early on? If it was that, then it's understandable, because it's horribly broken when that happens.

Nice! I'm trying to get a playthorugh done with each ship before FTLA comes out. Just trying to get a 2nd recorded playthrough on my YouTube channel. I don't care (too much) about winning with them though I have won with each ship. I just want to say I've got at least 2 solid playthroughs with each ship before delving into an all new (kind-of) game.

As to the DA-SR12... It's one of my favorite ships. Really. If you're wondering how to play it check out my win with it, and even check out my failed run that I "lost" due to a corrupt save game after successfully getting through sector 1. I too did not know how to play that ship until I gave it lot of time and effort, and now I appreciate it for the (sometimes unfair, but frequently not) challenge that it is.

EDIT: After this post, I figured I'd put my money where my mouth was. I started a DA-SR12 run and had some hairy points (I was at 1 hull for a couple jumps) but came out victorious.
