Pirate Overhaul Mod Concept

Hey guys, I just had this really awesome idea that I would like to see become a reality. I'm not sure if this has already been done or discussed here (if so let me know), but I had the thought of doing a massive overhaul of FTL in the form of a pirate game. What I mean by this is completely removing the setting of FTL being in space, to being in the sea. (bear with me on this one).

When you think about all the components of the game you can easily translate all of that into naval combat on the seven seas, think about it, replace the space cruisers with wooden ships, laser weapons to cannons, shields to voodoo magic force fields etc. Even things like the asteroid field instances could be replaced with a "rough seas" type deal. I understand that this is just an idea but I would love to hear what you guys think about it and if you guys would like to actually make a move on doing something with it. I myself have little to no modding experience but am willing to learn. I see how this could be seen as an ambitious project with myself having no experience on the modding front, but I truly think its an idea that could be made into something very exciting. I have tons more ideas other than the ones stated but didn't really want to make this post any longer than it should be.
