Settings.ini and a non-Admin user

Post by textheavy »

I learned that if you are experiencing poor display quality you can try adding the line:

swapTexture=1

To the settings.ini file in the FTL directory.

I then learned that in some cases, you may not have a settings.ini file until you run FTL as Admin.

I've done this, and it created the settings.ini file, and I've added the line.

Now the problem is that I only see the improved display when I run FTL as admin. This is an issue because I've already unlocked five ships, and when I run the game as Admin I'm starting from scratch.

I noted that the FTL folder has security by default that makes it read-only for non-Admin users. I had hoped that changing the security on the folder and files would allow the settings.ini file to be used when I play as non-Admin, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Does anyone have any recommendations to try for getting my existing, non-Admin game to start seeing the settings.ini file so I can have the improved graphics?

Unfortunately i can't understand why the game is installed admin-only or why it would cause your issue. Can you try installing the game for all users? Or setting your user as admin? You can change this in the control panel /Users, but it may affect the rest of your system so it's not recommended if you only need to run FTL.

C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\FasterThanLight is the folder that contains the profile for my user(also admin). Can you find out where FTL stores the profile when you run it as admin? You could copy your old profile into that location. Hopefully that would allow you to play with your old progress when running the game as admin.

I'm still confused why FTL is behaving as read-only for non administrators.

So I logged in on the Admin account and found the profile (prof.sav) file. I renamed it prof.sav.orig and then copied int the prof.sav file from my non-Admin game.

Then switched back to my regular account and ran the game as Admin. The display is good, and it has my saved progress!

That's a good enough workaround for me.

Still not sure why the game installed the way it did. I downloaded and installed it using my regular account, so I don't know why there is this issue of needed to be running as Admin in order to create the settings.ini file, and use it.

Thanks for the tip!
