They even call a great mod a ship modded like a banana or a car..
There is quite a vast swath of content between "banana" (which was actually quite fun) and a total conversion. Discounting all of it as beneath you does a disservice both to you and the modders.

I played Descent into Darkness and can appreciate it for what it is, but when I sit down to play FTL I sit down to play... well... FTL. Playing the vanilla game in a well-built, challenging, but interesting ship is the way I (and a lot of people) prefer to play once they've exhausted the base game. A unique weapon gives an interesting twist and allows me to play the vanilla game in yet another way. A total conversion is cool and all but it's just too different from the main game to keep me coming back.

A mod of a banana can be fun, but i play FTL cuz i want the "sensation" that i am piloting a space ship, not something else that is out of context completely and has nothing to do with the game itself.

All modding is a learning experience. Some people make overpowered god-like Kestrals, some make one-shot KO superweapons, and some make flying bananas. There's room enough for all of these, alongside the more serious or thematic efforts - no modding community should be that exclusionary. :) You're always entitled to your opinion and if something isn't to your taste then no one will try to force you to like it, or download it. But please, respect the effort others put forth in learning their craft, and recognize that sometimes people just want to be silly and have fun. ;)

This is a fact many before you have discovered for themselves as well. Beam color itself can't be changed, only the weapon at the point of firing (I remember one that had a very impressive flare effect while the beam was active), and the point at which the beam makes impact. I agree that red is the wrong color for an ion beam, but perhaps you can make at least the impact point a blue glow instead of red.

Well spoken Kieve. I totally see it like that.

Concerning the topic I just want to verify this: Are ion beams distributing their damage correctly now? They no longer completely deplete higher level shields on first hit?

I totally agree. But as i said, that does noting to do with the community itself, i modded for tons of games (including street fighter iv, gsb, arc, king's bounty, torchlight I & II, and a lot more, and never saw a community so ungrateful like this one. Its sad, but its a fact. A lot of modders (and i can for sure say this happened in other cases in other communities) just stop modding because of this matter, and the people who just enter the community and download a mod without even worrying about giving a little feedback are just making those modders to forgot about posting any mod on this forum. I lived that experience in other community along with other friends that as well stop doing stuff for people to play it. Because in the end, making a mod for nobody is stupid. Now im working on a babylon 5 mod, and it will a really awesome mod, but im not going to post here any advance, since its useless. I was just making this point to be clear. Sometimes, people ask why a modder just dissapeared, or why that mod that was so promissing suddenly stop updating, well this is one of the main reasons. And then u have people still even requesting mods because they even dont want to move a finger to learn modding. Sorry, but its pathetic lol. Yes i value all mods, but honestly, making a ship just changing the room layout or just switching the weapon loadouts is not a good mod. I waste about 4-5 minutes doing that. And there are tons of mods like that in the community. And they receive extensive feedback (compared with other better and more polished mods) and evertything else. So, as i said, my main frustration is that i dont understand the behaviour of this community. Thats all lol.

Ion beams are fine now. I know ion damage doesnt stack on bullet type weapons (checked) but talking about ion beams im not completely sure, but if u make an ion beam with only 1 ion damage and lenght about 60-80 (just about 2 rooms or so) and no shield piercing, thats a regular good ion beam. I dunno if the ion damage stacks over the 2 rooms , but i dont think so. As i said, i tested it only a couple of times in my mod, and i saw it works almost fine, so i just stop doing tests.

Well, this is my first mod so i'm encouraged to see the positive and negative truths about the world of modding.

I did another test run with my old ion beams and they still completely deplete two and more shields in one shot, even if you just hit one room (on 1.03.03 that is).

Did you test this with your beams?

Yes, but thats unavoidable. As far as i know there is no way to use an ion beam and deplete only 1 shield, thats impossible. I think the last update did something about ion stacking mechanics, but as far as u noticed, ion beams still doesnt work as intended. Still u can make an ion beam, that depletes all shields, but only , as i said dealing 1 ion damage, small lenght (to reach only 1-2 rooms in case the enemy has no shields..) and long recharge rates. That way u have an ion beam useful, and balanced. It will be great if we could make ion beams that depletes 1-2-3-4 shields. It will be a really interesting addon to modding.
