Save Games issues - really funny

Post by dwbmb »

Hello
I was playing FTL for about two days and I have to leave it for a while cause it's driving me crazy. Even other games "sometimes" crashes. But "sometimes" means "sometimes" with most other games. Here with FTL it means "OMFG IT WILL NEVER LET ME FINISH THE GAME".

What makes it frustrating even more is your happy "save game auto deletion" system. How to save a game is very easy in FTL - "Save and quit" button. Simple as f*. But is good for something at all while it's being deleted constantly?

Game crashes - save game got deleted itself
You go back to menu - save game got deleted itself
You just quit - save game got deleted itself

Second two cases you can live with in case you have huge post-it with "IT WILL DELETE YOUR SAVE GAME UNLESS YOU SAVE IT AGAIN" on your LCD. But with game crashing very often (as seen all over this forum), this your super-cool "save game auto deletion" script should be disabled.

Please.

The way the savegame system works is that you're only allowed to save the game using the save&quit option. This creates a savegame file which will be deleted once it is loaded or the player starts a new game. There is no way to keep a savegame file, the Save&quit option only exists to allow you to quit without losing progress because sometimes other work interferes with playing. But in FTL there's no saving as it is common in other games. Think of Save&quit as an emergency save.

Going back to the menu will warn the player that his game will be lost. If you must go to the menu, save&quit again, but be warned taht the savegame file will be lost once it is loaded or you choose to start a new game.

As for game crashes, well that just screwes everything like it does in most other games. FTL does not crash often though. It has not once crashed on me and there are almost 0 complaints about stability and crashes during gameplay. The currently reported problems are about startup crashes for no apparent reason as the game worked fine before, but can now not even be started.

If you must keep a savegame, you can do it by going to your profile folder (kept generally in My Documents/My Games/Faster Than Light) and making a backup copy of the savegame file. If this file is restored, the game will allow you to load it and continue playing. Again, the file itself will be gone as soon as it's loaded. This is not a convenient way to handle saved game, but FTL was designed not to have savegame.

If you are having frequent crashes, look in your game folder (Probably Program Files/FTL) for crashlogs and post them here. Maybe there are some compatibility issues. Also be sure to mention any mods you are using and the version of the game you are playing. As i have mentioned FTL is a stable game and does not crash easily/often.

Oh, I see. So it's not a bug, but a "feature". Great :D

Well I didn't read all that topics entirely to be honest. Before I will send you my ingame-crash log, please can you briefly describe me what those values (1 through 7) means? I'm sorry for being paranoic a little, but I want to know what I am sending to strangers :)

You can email your crashlogs, the contents of stdout.txt (found in your FTL game folder) and a directX diagnostic report if you can, all to zasdarq@ftlgame.com with a short description of the crash problem.

It will reach the developers of the game so they might figure out what's going on. This is optional, so if you want to keep your privacy that's fine. I think there's no personal data anyway though the dxdiag may contain some OS information. The traces are mostly about the game interacting with drivers and hardware.

Either way, keep checking the forum for a solution, since you're not alone in this. Sorry about the frustrations. :( The devs check the forum so a solution will be posted once it is found.

Also, there are some restrictions for new users posting on the forum. Just FYI, so you don't freak out if your posts dont display or dissapear.
