[SOLVED] Halberd Beam doesn't work

Post by _FyreStorm »

I keep trying to use the first ship I unlocked, even before the torus, the zoltan cruiser/the adjucator... and at first i'm like 'wow this halberd beam is awesome!' then usually by sector 3 or 4 it just stops working. I've looked up as much information on beams and such as I can and it doesn't say anything about being able to block them or anything and then I thought maybe they're simply dodging but once it starts bugging and missing it misses FOR THE REST OF THE GAME. Am I the only one this has been happening to? It's really upsetting because I just started getting into the groove of the game and 1/3 of the ships I have unlocked is useless.

Alright that may have been a bit vague. More specifically the animation will go from my ship, behind the portrait of the enemy ship, and deal no damage. Like I said at first I thought maybe it's because i'm in a nebula, maybe it's because of some item the enemy has, but without fail I will start a run-through with the zoltan cruiser and inevitably have to sell the halberd beam because it simply will not work even though I try it 4-5 times in a row.

Okay: Using Kestral A I literally JUST got a Halberd beam floating in space, used it for 1 battle and won easily in sector 2 and then the NEXT FIGHT it just simply won't connect, i'm pretty sure i've lost because I had it on auto-fire and didn't even realize it wasn't working until I shot 3 times with it. Is this even a known bug? Is there just something wrong with my file?

The game itself tells you this:

Note: Beam damage is reduced by one for every shield it passes through, which allows for partial shield piercing.

Your Halberd Beam only does 2 damage per room to a ship with 1 shield. It does 1 damage to a ship with 2 shields. Around sector 3-4 you start seeing ships with 3 shields, and the beam can't penetrate them. You'll need to find a way to take those shields down, either for a few seconds or more permanently.

In the sector 2 example the enemy only has 2 shields, and if i'm judging by your information then it would mean i'd still deal 1 damage or your information is true but reasoning is faulty (i.e. 2 shields = 2 reduced damage) but it isn't even damaging their shield...

Edit1: Also- even when i'm using the Adjucator and I ion all their shield away the beam simply will not deal damage and i've lost so many times because of that.
Edit2: I literally JUST lost the battle I was talking about in sector 2 because I kept trying to use the beam even after their shields went down. Do you mean overall shields (raised or not) or shields that are actually up?
Edit3: Maybe you thought I meant glaive beam which deals 3 dmg? Halberd only does 2 so 2 shields up would theoretically negate all damage but I thought it would also deal damage to the shield when it's getting deflected?
Edit4: I think he meant to say glaive beam, if anything I wish this information was more widespread. Sorry if I reported a non-bug. /topic

Beam do not 'crack' the shield directly like bullets does, but will 'pass' through them and do reduced strength if it can, so Halberd will do 0 dmg if fired at ship with 2 shields, while Glaive will do 1 dmg.

Yeah I tried to find information on beams to tell me something like that but it just wasn't given and I assumed it was glitching since it did 1 dmg at least before when it had shields up. So sorry again, a mod can delete the topic.

Oh no, they shouldn't (and I don't think they will). If you didn't know this, then someone else won't. Hopefully they'll find this on a search and it'll save them the problems you had.

Sorry about the confusion! And it's definitely best to leave topics like these up in case more people are confused.

If there are any more issues with beams or other aspects of the game, just a quick screenshot would really help to make sure we all understand what's going on :)
