worked fine and then the lag hit

Post by EvilxFish »

Ok so I have been playing FTL for a few days now (got it on steam) and have played 12 hours without issue in total and have quite enjoyed the game (incredibly addictive as well XD ). However today it decided it was going to start lagging to an extent the game became unplayable...
I have tried changing to full screen mode no effect. I also checked the steam forum others have posted a similar issue however no solution has been suggested. Any help would be appreciated

Have you changed you video driver settings, per chance?

Can you answer the following questions, to help the devs help you:

- What operating system do you use (Windows, Linux, Mac?)
- Is it a 64-bits operating system?
- Is it a desktop or a laptop? If it is a laptop, what brand?
- What graphics card do you have?
- Are you graphic card drivers up-to-date?

I use Windows 8
Its a 64-bit operating system
it's a desktop
AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphics card
Video drivers are up to date

The game worked fine up until yesterday when all of a sudden it started lagging to the extent it became unplayable.
other games still work the same

Hello,

I am having exactly the same problem. I played for over 50 hours without any sort of problems or slowdowns, but now since about 2(?) days ago I experience extreme lag, usually on the 2nd or 3rd battle after starting. For example, the Burst Laser II, when it fires, shoots a laser about every other second, so it takes 6 seconds to fire once (instead of the usual 1 second or so). The crew members walk at a snail's pace. Et cetera.

I have been searching and searching for a solution or a cause on my system, but from this thread and similar ones on Steam forums, I'm beginning to think it isn't my system which is the problem. I can't figure out what variable has changed for me in the last 2 days... no new installs, nothing.

I tried forcing Vertical Sync in my NVIDIA control panel (per another thread) but that did not work. I have tried disabling just about every running process in Win7 except FTL -- no luck.

Windows 7 64-bit
8gb RAM
Dual-Core 2.53 (Vaio CW)
GeForce GT 230M

Again let me reiterate that all of us having this problem played the game with NO problem for quite a while. Some little variable somewhere has changed (for all of us). A corrupted file somewhere? Is it the save game size? Some magic bugged achievement?

It seems like it's a Steam issue rather than a specific system issue. Steam users playing linux versions have also had some problems recently so maybe the issues are related.

FTL itself has not had any patches or updates in the recent week or so.

[SOLVED!]
So after reading this I started hunting for a way to try the game with Steam client closed [there is no legal way, apparently], but then I found this mysterious "Offline Mode" thing on Steam which I'd never noticed before. I try it out and it works perfectly. I played to the end of sector 1 and had one little slowdown for a split second, which was probably just my old laptop derping. So I'd say this particular issue definitely seems to be with Steam, and, honestly, I'm not surprised now that I think about it. Steam updates itself about 10 times per day. I swear I was in msconfig killing every process except FTL (and Steam haha). I will post something about this in the Steam forum thread as well.

I dislike Steam for pretty much that reason. All the user friendliness cant make up for those moments when i'm kept away from playing or updating my game. That said, Steam will resolve the issue, whatever it is.

A legal way for all those who purchased the game from the website (which features a Steam key) is to install and play the DRM-free version, if the Steam one is acting up. The profile and savegame are kept separately, so no progress is lost.

Sigh

In my excitement I spoke too soon. With Steam in offline mode, it ran fine for a while but then started to slow down again as soon as I hit a nebula section. So then I tried the DRM-free version, completely closed Steam (and everything else), and had the slow-down in sector 1. So it isn't actually Steam, after all. It must have something to do with the prof.sav file. I'm gonna back it up, completely re-install with blank prof, and see if it still happens.

It seems to be a graphics thing. It slows down immediately in the nebula, even with the backgrounds disabled (and they were never disabled for those 50+ hours of playing before). Similarly, when a lot of stuff is shooting at once (like the Red-Tail's load-out). Once I kill the ship and am just sitting there, it continues to lag for a minute but will eventually fix itself once all the weapons have recharged and the crew has stopped moving. Then it is fine for the FTL jump but immediately starts lagging again when shooting begins.

Maybe original poster can try out the offline steam thing for a few sectors?
