There is. If you hit escape and choose "Save and Quit" you can come back to that game later as long as you hit continue next time you start the game.

There should be the possibility to save in middle of battles. I have lost a promising game because I had to go but was in middle of Flagship stage 1.

I paused a battle for lunch, came back to find it had unpaused somehow, killed my opponent on Autofire, and lost all but my non-breathing crew member due to 0% O2. Cat, or bug?

There's a crew member that doesn't need 02?

I haven't heard of a bug where the game gets unpaused... so probably a cat. Let me know if it happens again.
