True

I want to make this lil ship a hard hitting Boarder, but the missiles at start just screws me over 9/10 times.

Man do I hate missiles.

If I'm in the ergi ship, I get tons of missiles as salvage. if the rock cruiser, tons of drone parts.

FTL hates me.

otherwise I come against a 3 shield bubbled rebel ship with missile pods. and my lasers miss and miss and miss. . .

Got the damaged stasis pod. Got the zoltan event to wake up the crystal guy. Got 4 red sectors in a straight line ahead of me. One is a pirate controlled sector. The other three are rock... controlled sectors (not homeworlds). D8

Stormed through he first zones with the Engi ship blasting everything out of the sky. By the end my setup was, IIRC, anti-ship drone I, defense drone I, ion cannon II, Hull laser (2 shots) and Hull beam. Ship was equipped with 3 shields and stealth II.

Sounds great, right?

Wrong ... I just could not do damage quick enough to the flagship to get its 4 shields down without taking damage, having to make repairs and generally having a terrible time.

The battle was a disaster. Shots missed, the flagship used its stealth to recharge shields just as they were about to be worn down, its own shots hit my weapons at vital moments ect ect .. and so on......and so on.

Eventually I destroy the first section, but I'm down to a hull held together with sticky tape - just 2 bars left! I reckon I can have a go at the second section of the flagship if I can get repairs ... but all the repair stations ar back at the start of the map.

I dully jump back anyway, knowing that I probably won't have time to attack the flagship before it gets to the Fleet base.

I shouldn't have bothered - just one jump away from the last repair station, it gets overtaken by the rebels and turns into a 4-shielded drone.

I didn't even bother fighting back.

I had a few FU FTL moments last night when I finally decided to play the Nesasio (stealth ship). I am not too familiar with the ship but since it has no shields I knew that drones and beam weapons would be very tough to beat until I had some upgrades.

Game 1:
Sector 1, Node 1: Mantis ship with... Anti-ship Drone 1 and Pike Beam. I run away with 1/3 of my hull left.
Sector 1, Node 2: Rebel ship with... Beam-drone 1 and Ion Cannon (first Ion shot takes out cloak). My ship explodes.

Game 2:
Sector 1, Node 1: Slug ship with... Anti-ship Drone 1 and Pike Beam (again! wtf!). I run away with 1/3 of my hull left.
Sector 1, Node 2: Rebel ship with... Anti-ship Drone 1 and Burst Laser 1. My ship explodes. Now I'm MAD!

Game 3:
Sector 1, Node 2: Mantis ship with Anti-ship Drone 1 and Beam-drone 1 (seriously FTL, you hate me tonight!). I run away with about half my hull, and I think the game is over.
I spend the next two sectors pretty much avoiding any ship encounters, get Cloak lvl 2 and a Halberd Beam; and now the game is going very well (am now in Sector 6, finally got me some shields).

Man, the Nesasio is a tough ship to play!

Some games are just amazing, right until something really, really, really bad happens. I ended up commanding the Rising World to the Slug Home Nebula, getting the quest to unlock the Slug Ship (which has caused me much grief in the past) on the first surrender. I was able to make it to the quest marker, and barely artillery beam the enemy ship to death before it jumped away, finally unlocking the Slug Cruiser.

At this point I had an outstanding crew. A maxed-out crewman for every mannable station, two engies with maxed repair skill, and two mantis on guard duty.

Unfortunately, the game spawned that quest marker in a place that was very inconvenient, and I ended up burning most of my fuel reserves. However, I did manage to make it to the next sector, and ran out of fuel midway.

This is when I learned that when you get too attached to your crew, the game will murder them in the slowest, most painful possible way.

The first ship was the BEST DEAL! Slug Ship, which I decided to take my chance and fight, since it would have been easy to take it down. Well, it would have been, but all four of my ion bombs missed (as did most of my lasers), and my artillery beam refused to hit either the helm or the engines.

So that ship speeds off. No worries, right? NOPE. The next two ships to find the Rising World are auto-scouts, both with cloaking and four shields, and both FTLing away, bringing the rebel fleet right on top of me. Any attempts to stop them were in vain, as my last four ion bombs all missed.

I end up fighting two rebel elites, with only the artillery beam to save me. Unsurprisngly, they escape, but by now the rebels have taken the exit and most of the rest of the sector.

And then the third ship arrived. Four shields, burst laser III, and three missile systems. My drone control is hit, and the results are predictable.

Moral of the story: When the game is out to get you (which is 80% of the time or so), buy the fuel from the slugs.

I thought I was being clever, having a slug ship called The Lurking Fear and naming the two crew members HP and Lovecraft. I decided to make this my first serious run in the slug ship.
Slug ship lovecraft.png

First move I make is to FTL into a nebula to start working on the ship achievement. As soon as I get there four (4!!!!) boarders teleport onto my ship from absolutely nowhere (again, this is sector 1, after my FIRST JUMP). I dash my panicked slugs to the medbay, vent oxygen, even use a breach bomb on my own ship to try and kill the boarders but in about 1 minute both my slugs are paste.

Wow, i've had some horrible starts but those are hard to beat. I normally don't see so many pike beams, usually every ship i encounter has a damned minibeam...

EDIT - When facing Rebel Riggers you can usually silence them if you manage to squeeze the Mini Beam tightly in between multiple rooms. Wait for both weapons to charge then begin by attacking the Drone Control with Dual Lasers. As soon as the shield is down place the Mini-Beam on the Drone Control room just above the Shields room and close to the wall that divides Shields and the empty room. Place the end point of the beam on the Weapons room but make it diagonal so you also hit the enmpty room.

The result should be both your weapons hitting DC and knocking it offline, Shields and Weapons taking damage and hull losing 4HP. I don't know of any other ship that places so many juicy targets close together. If you have a longer beam you can also nail the Engines. :D

I just joined this forum.
I'm fairly new to the game. I got the game during a GoG special in December and have been loving every minute of it.
I have beaten the game a couple times on Easy but don't feel like I've learned enough to tackle normal yet. (First few attempts at it were disastrous!)
Anyway, I just had to post in this thread my crazy FU FTL run from today:

Kestrel A, 3 humans, one bites the dust (should have listened to "never say yes to spiders").
With just two crew, I'm hitting every store possible to try to find more. I'm not finding a single slaver ship.
With lots of crazy rotating and venting O2 to stay alive, I make it through to sector 5. I have hit at least a half dozen stores and not one of them had crew for sale.
Due to 2 mantis boarding during a solar flare in sector 5, I lose another crew (he died one step from the med bay). I survive but am down to 1 crew driving the ship in sector 6. First jump in sector 6 a store!! ... no crew for sale.
I am able to get weapon pre-igniter, I have two Laser burst 2s and pike beam. With this, I'm able to barely survive for a few jumps, every one of which has mantis teleporting on deck.
I survive and am happy with my strategy of trying to take out the teleporter first. This is actually working. If I can just find a store with crew, I can spend my 261 scrap! Then next jump, no ship to fight, just 3 mantis come on board right next to pilot room. I lock my poor single crewmember to level 2 med bay, open door strategically to steer the mantis around my ship hoping to asphyxiate them. No, they head to med bay, bust through level 3 doors in no time flat and promptly whack the remaining crew. All this on easy. rng? random? haha
Still had a blast during the very tense and frantic run.

Edit:
Oh the irony. Very next game I find 2 slavers in first sector and I already have 5 crew with the additions being a rockman and mantis.

That's FTL for ya LordJ. She loves me, she loves me not...

Disasterous runs on normal are not unusual. Even experienced players can be cornered and overwhelmed. Knowing a ship and it's limits helps but doesn't guarantee succes, in some games you just get dealt a very crappy hand and have little chance.

Keep fighting, victory is allways sweet. :D

First jump in new game landed me in an asteroid field. A battle ensued with a scout i think. First hit takes out my oxygen and starts a fire. I vent the compartments to get rid of the fire and also cycle guys to between med bay and oxygen generator to fix it. Then the med bay gets hit. Over the next minute i lose my shield generator and jump drive but defeat the scout.

Now remember im in an asteroid field, so by the time i've finished the repairs on the oxygen generator i've been pummeled by asteroids. I was down to one bar of armor by the time i got the shields back up.

THIS IS THE FIRST JUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talk about bad luck. Needless to say, i died on the second jump.
