I Beat the Game!

Post by FlyingLemmingSoup »

*Edit:* Whoops! Just realized that I posted this in 'Tip, Strategy and Guides' rather than in 'General Discussion.'

On easy, of course.

First post here, I'm a fairly new player to the game (new meaning that I spent about 15 hours playing before I actually managed to beat it.)

After trying out a few ships I managed to unlock on previous, failed play-throughs, I went back to the Kestrel 'A' and struck gold. Getting a Zolton as my first crew member was a decent addition (though I lost him on a failed chance mission later.) Getting an Engi and two Mantises made repairing damage and repelling boarders a breeze.

By the end of the game, I was able to max out shields, engines, weapons, sensors, and doors. I didn't have any drones, boarding or stealth capability, but I didn't really need it. Max shields and engines gave me some pretty substantial defense. My only augmentations were long-range sensors and weapon re-load.

Now, to the meat of the matter - my weapons. I lucked out early on and found a second Burst Laser II, which I've found since coming onto the forums pretty much everyone likes. Later I came across a Fire Beam and a Breach Bomb II. This was why I maxed out weapons, since each one of these weapons requires 2 power. While the BL2's were reliable and powerful, and the Breach Bomb II was quite effective, the Fire Beam was really what made this build. Against smaller enemies, it was quite fun to use, but against the boss it was ESSENTIAL. Once I downed his shields, I could set fire to the shield compartment and everything else I could reach. At that point, without his shields, the battle was won. I just had to take out that ever-annoying three-shot missile launcher and drone control and he couldn't touch me. It was SO satisfying watching his crew scurry around that ship, trying to put out all the fires. Really, it may not seem very practical, but that fire beam has so much destructive potential, and it is fun as all get out.

Nice win. :D Cooking the boss is very satisfying as well.

Cloaking is very usefull for dodging power surges, but not essenital if you can dodge well (MAX engines and 2 skilled crew). Teleporter is a great asset because it can silence the Tri-Missile launcher and remove the nastiest weapon the boss has. If you have solid offense (BL2, Halberd, Hull Missile or Beam) and good crew and reloaders you can try and attack the hull directly and finish him off before you take too much damage. It's very nice to crunch the flagship.

Fires are breaches both hurt the crew trying to make repairs and prevent any repairing as well until the fire/breach is dealt with first. Fires are especially painfull when they get out of control.

Have fun playing, and Welcome to the forum. :)
