FTL Native Resolution Fullscreen option behavior in Lin/Win

Post by nikto »

Hello! First of all i would like to thank you guys for such an amazing game - Thank You! :-)
The question is about different behavior of <Fullscreen - On - "FTL Native Resolution"> option in Windows and Linux versions of the game.
In Windows this option does the same result as <Fullscreen - On Black Borders>. I.e. it keeps game's aspect ratio (1280x720). In Linux <FTL Native Resolution> stretches the game vertically (my monitor is 17", 1280x1024 native; gpu is nvidia).
So, what <FTL Native Resolution> supposed to do?

Game's v1.02.6 changelog says: "FTL Native Resolution fixed to accurately provide the pre-1.02 Fullscreen method for older PCs". This is a bit confusing for people who joined a party a bit late. :P

Native Resolution will attempt to run the game in its native resolution, 1280x720. It was a simple method for 'fullscreen' when we launched the game, and since we intended people to mostly play in windowed we thought it was sufficient. It didn't work out for a lot of people, so the more robust "stretch" mode was created.

What's happening for you in Native: Windows doesn't think your card / monitor support 1280x720 so it's finding the closest value it does support and making black borders. Linux is probably saying "sure! 1280x720, no problem!" and not caring about aspect ratio, supplies the resolution and that results in strange stretching on your monitor.

In "stretched," FTL will use your desktop resolution and fit FTL into it by literally stretching the image to fit best and preserve the aspect ratio.

Since the game is a fixed resolution of 1280x720, everything is just a method to display that many pixels on the monitor in various ways. If your monitor is a different aspect ratio, then it's impossible to stretch the game without borders and not have it distorted.

Thank for explanation, Matt.
btw, i have absolutely no problems with playing it in a window. I just play games only in fullscreen - less distractions and more immersion. :)
