Mouse pointer 'floaty and unresponsive' until I switch VT

Post by cody-somerville »

Hey,

I bought FTL the other day and love it. I'm running it on a Dell Vostro 1520 which has a GeForce 9300M GS. My OS is Ubuntu 11.04. I found that I encounter the mouse problem mentioned in the FAQ every time I start the game - the mouse pointer is floaty and unresponsive to the point of no utility. Initially switching to full screen fixed it but subsequent starts displayed the same problem.

However, I've discovered that I can reliably fix the problem by switching to a different virtual terminal and then back after starting the game.

I did a quick search of the forums to see if anybody had reported this behaviour already and didn't find anything off the bat. Hopefully the above information can be useful in assisting tracking down this issue.

Cheers,

Cody

I have been searching through the forum to find a fix for this. Nothing.

I cannot update my radeon x1650 drivers, as they are the final drivers. The "Legacy" drivers, catalyst etc do not work with this card on windows 7.

This is extremely frustrating since this game does look incredible, and I actually spent money because I knew it was made by a small team and they deserve the money. I run WoW, LoL, etc perfect. How can this 2d game not run. I was wrong to make this purchase, you guys still must have a lot of things to fix.

I have read a lot of other people on the forum with the same problem. The loading screen is perfect, the main menu isnt horrible, but still almost unbearable, but once I start the tutorial its unplayable, I should have to spend 10 seconds trying to put my mouse to one location on the screen with a slight bit of accuracy.

Oh btw, tried Vsync on / off , fullscreen on /off framerate on / off etc etc etc. Done every thing from every post on this forum. Nothing. Radeib x1650, 3.3gb ram, Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40GHz.

@Cory: That is very strange, I wouldn't know why that would be happening but I'll definitely look into it, thanks for the update and sorry about the problem.

@B1adeh: The problem is usually caused by poor driver support for OpenGL, which is (sadly) not something we have any control over. ATI especially seems to have faulty OpenGL support. ATI also dropped official support for many of their older cards int Windows 7, and many relatively recent ones (< 2 years) for Windows 8, which is a frustration as well. While ATI does not officially support Windows 7 with the legacy drivers, many people have fixed the problem using the 10.2 Catalyst Legacy drivers found here:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/w ... sta32.aspx

Is there a specific reason your computer cannot use those drivers?

If anyone purchased the game from our website, I can definitely offer an immediate refund if you just email me at zasdarq@ftlgame.com. You'll have to contact Steam or GOG if you purchased it from them. I'm sorry that you (or anyone) regrets the purchase and we'll be continuing to find a work-around.

@matthew

I appreciate the support Matt. The only reason I regret buying it is because of course, I cannot play, lol.
I have tried the drivers before and they either seem to do nothing, or as once last time crashed my whole system, and had to do a lot of recovery.

Just frustrating a game like LoL or WoW can run, and FTL cannot. I feel most frustrated with the support from the Video card company, it must have something to do with AMD buying ATI ( I think that happend ). I am going to try again to get these drivers to work.

Thanks for the support at least Matt, its appreciated. I am assuming the testing done with the game was not done with 3 year old drivers and old cards. None the less, some people still have them. Wish me luck.

Sorry for the delay, got distracted with dealing with the sale causing an increase in workload. That's the trouble with a 2 person studio :(

I did look at it and I don't see any reason that you should have any troubles using those drivers. Have you tried ATI's auto-driver-update utility, just to see what it makes of it? You could try uninstalling your current drivers and reinstalling those legacy ones, or whatever ATI ones you're currently using, since generally starting from a clean slate is more reliable... but if you have troubles installing drivers then that might be a risk.

My 7 year old laptop has similar video issues, mostly caused by my installation of Windows 7 on it even though the hardware isn't supported by Windows 7.

Sorry about this. If I come across anything else I'll be sure to notify you.

Hi, I'm having the same problem here. I'm feeling kind of frustrated for not being able to play the game. Hope you can come with a solution soon.
