Unlocking Crew?

I've noticed that the crew members have race descriptions when you hover over them (In the Hangar). Is there a way to unlock other races, or is that just a "For show" feature? If I can unlock crew, how do I do it?

Different ships that you unlock start with different crew. You can view the same race description during a game by clicking "ship", then "crew". During the course of a game you can recruit more crew members from the other races.
