Corrupt save or something?

Post by NoValidTitle »

Hello! First off let me tell you how amazingly addictive this game is. I have 14 hours played, unlocked a few ships, beat it on normal once. Last night I was up late playing on normal with the stealth cruiser. I got all the way to sector 7 before I decided to go to bed. Well I just got up and logged in and the continue button cant be clicked...

I am using game save manager and drop box. I tried to restore to the saves from last night again but it always results in the same thing. Any ideas?

Only thing i can think of is that your save game files were moved and now the game can't find them. Forgive me for asking a dumb question, but are you certain you clicked on the Save&Quit option before turning the game off?

What are the contents of: Users\<USERNAME>\My Documents\My Games\FasterThanLight\ ?

There should be two files there, prof.sav and continue.sav. The first is your profile and the second your saved game. If they aren't there, do a file search for continue.sav and see if it exsits at all. If you find it, copy it into the folder above and start FTL again.

Ok so I solved it (I <3 dropbox) the continue.sav was missing. I was able to restore it with dropbox.

So I have a question then... if I save and quit, re-open the game, continue then click main menu will that delete my save? O_o I assumed that if I save and quit it makes the save but if I am back in the game and hit main menu it would just lose the progress from the last save, not delete the whole save file.

As soon as you chose to continue your game, the save file is deleted. It is only created again when you save&quit. This is in the spirit of rogue-like games, and the so-called perma-death feature. These game (including FTL) discourage the use of several save files, and look down upon starting again from your last save point. They think that games are more meaningful and engaging of you only have "one life". When you die, you have to start again from scratch.

Of course, there are always ways around that restriction, as you have discovered thanks to Dropbox. You could also manually copy continue.sav, and copy it back in case you lose a promising game. This is called save-scumming, frowned upon by some people, defiantly practiced by others.

I didn't realize the mechanics of it deleting the save when you continue. I didn't die or anything, I wasn't trying to go back because I died. I just wanted to go to the main menu. I thought when it said progress will be lost it meant progress from the previous save point. But luckily with drop box I was able to restore it. It's frowned up to restore a save for not understanding the menu?

Sorry about the confusion! I'm glad dropbox saved you, it's definitely not frowned upon to recover from a poorly explained game :(
