Game runs slow in Windows 8

Post by Puddle »

The game takes longer than normal to load on startup and the mouse is sluggish once the game is open. I've tried running it in compatibility mode and with as administrator. Any ideas?

I noticed that too. On the same machine, FTL ran like a dream on Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I installed Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and it ran like you described.

I was thinking it might be a video driver problem but I couldn't find Windows 8 drivers for my old card. Installing a newer card with Windows 8 drivers fixed the problem. Kinda along way to go for a $10 game.

Yea I thought it might be a driver problem, but my resource hungry games like Shogun 2 Total war run just fine

The performance of other games has no relation to the performance of FTL, which uses different techniques for its rendering. Have you tried upgrading your video driver?

The driver support for both ATI and NVIDIA is definitely lacking for the newest windows. ATI dropped support for a lot of their older cards (even just 2 years old and earlier I believe) for Windows 8. There are beta drivers available and the support is getting better all the time... just make sure you're fully up to date if you have this problem. I don't think many people find it completely broken forever, generally the right drivers are out there.
