Is my profile saved on the steam servers?
I have ftl installed via steam on my net book. Does this mean my profile is saved to my steam account, and can be retrievable if I lost the profile on my netbook due to a crash or something?

I think it is saved on Steam servers (but I don't use the Steam version, so I cannot confirm).
Note that it could happen that your profile gets corrupted and then saved on Steam, so if you delete the profile and start again from scratch, the corrupted profile is restored.
If profile corruption is a worry (notably if the game is less than perfectly stable on your computer), you should make backup copies, notably after your unlock a ship or an achievement.

Check this thread for the location of the directory where FTL saves your progress: http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1892 (it depends on your operating system).
Then simply make copies of prof.sav. If that file ever gets corrupted, you can delete it and copy one of your backups, making sure to rename it "prof.sav".
