Yet another update Idea (but slightly different)

Post by Feadric »

I have been lurking for awhile on the forums and all the suggestions for updates seem to fall into a couple categories (sandbox, making new ship types, diversity in ship upgrade systems). So I thought, why keep it just to one ship? Why not control a small fleet of 4-5 ships (this would work well with multiplayer). The diversity would be more in enemy fleet compositions, not just the individual ships themselves. This would also add another strategic aspect to the game; to focus all of your upgrades on one ship, or to spread them out evenly. Maybe you could also position your ships differently in your fleet, with different layouts have different advantages and disadvantages. Of course, in order for this to happen, you would seriously need a better hot key system where you could queue multiple orders much more quickly, and the UI would have to be updated, but after all that, I think that the game would be mush more strategic and enjoyable.

I think that if you added more ships to the mix then you would effectively be changing the game's core so much that it would cease to be FTL.

The game is about a single ship trying to get from point A to B with a time limit imposed. Your choices boil down to what to purchase and when, fuel management, and great combat mechanics.

The game doesn't need more ships or some open-ended universe to explore; there are actually other games to simulate this (Endless Space). What the game needs is to focus on what makes it great currently and to expand on that. MORE combat options, MORE upgrades, MORE diverse encounters, MORE crew options, etc.

Right now there is really no personal feeling of connection with any one crew. Having missions where you used your crew more than your ship would add a lot to the game! There are scenarios where you get boarded and there's no ship around. If the reverse could happen, that would be fun! There could be scenarios that you could partake in even if you didn't have the proper equipment. For example, some outpost wants you to steal a ship and bring it back to them, and they have the teleporter for you to use. If you say yes then you get dropped into another ship, with multiple levels and you would traverse stairs to change levels...

Outfitting crew with various weapons could be great, too. Stun weapons, etc. That way you would be giving orders to the crew in more ways than simple movement.

You make valid points about my Ideas, I had not considered the focus of the game as much as I had the mechanics. However I have a couple questions/comments for your ideas.
-How would the combat work? The combat (as of now) is just whoever has the most or the best people in a room, how do you make the combat feel dynamic and strategic without changing the game mechanics to much. I also dont see how adding crew weapons make the fighting more strategic as it just adds the WoW endgame effect (numbers to get better numbers that do well against certain kinds of numbers)
- Having multiple stair levels for ships is an interesting idea, but that doesn't fit with the game right now as most of the opponents you fight are small fighter ships. The only way I could see that work is if you were in a space station advancing through corridors, making decisions much as you do in the Sector Map, choosing the type of encounters you have. This however would be to much like the main part of the game and does not sound interesting to me
-Also, I don't see how it is possible to get attached to the crew as the games are too short. If you were to increase the time of the game to get more attached to the crewmembers, then the feeling of urgency trying to get to the last stand would be diminished.

I also presented my multiplayer Idea badly. you still only control your ship, and tend to it's needs and crew in and out of combat, but your doing it with other people who work with you in order to defeat other enemies
More in a little while

For reference, it's been said several times by the game developers that they're uninterested in adding any sort of multiplayer, ever, and any other new feature suggestions (rather than bug fixes) are, if at all implemented, likely to be fairly far down the line.
