grrr

Post by Postmortem »

Ok let me start by saying, great game, very addictive, been playing a lot. But', 1 maybe a bit too hard. 2 not quite what I expected, (was expecting more flying about, more time to explore really). And 3 great game ( even Though what i thought it would be). Been reading up on some tips, but some of them seem to be rubbish, like never accepting surrender, (seems ships surrendering often offer better rewards). Anyway been having good fun playing the game, still only got 2 victories under my belt, Any suggestions for me to tackle normal difficulty. The game is fun, but seems to relie a bit too much on plain old luck.

Welcome to the forums. :)

Yes, the random aspect of the game can be frustrating sometimes (but also an interesting challenge when you become good with the game). This has inevitably been debated quite a lot. ;)

Advice is always to be taken with a grain of salt. I don't know where you read to "never" accept surrenders, I think it should be "rarely". Typically you gain more scrap if you destroy the enemy (or even better, if you take it intact), but surrender offers usually contain a bit more resources (fuel, missiles, drone parts, etc.), so you have to judge each offer based on what you need, and what prices stores usually make you pay for the resources. There are also pirate events that offer you a team member as part of the surrender, I typically always take those.

I have not read everything in this thread with full attention, but it contains a lot of interesting advice about playing the game in normal difficulty: http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3485

Welcome aboard.

Try not to be frustrated by losing. If you end up really liking the game, the knowledge that you can never become invincible actually adds to the game's longevity and replayability. And your own experience will add to whatever weapons or unique abilities each ship has.

Unless you're reading my advice, yeah treat it with suspicion. In fact, why are you even reading advice? Best is to play the game and learn by making mistakes. All the advice either spoils the surprises or teaches your how to play like someone else. As for surrenders... take it or leave it. If you belive they offer to little, pound them and salvage the remains. But if they offer a good deal (maybe they give fuel and you happen to be low on fuel, or they offer a weapon that would serve you perfectly) then take the deal. Another reason to accept surrender is to end the fight and stop taking damage.

The only advice i can give is to cover your ship's weakneses, whatever they may be. A sturdy shield keeps beams away, and good engines recharge the FTL drive faster giving you the option to retreat and lick your wounds.
