Im not entirely sure what it was, but I found it in sector 4(maybe 3?) and it was a massive beam on an energy bomber and did 3 damage per room. And I was doing rather well until then.
And THAT ladies and gentleman are why there are so many rage threads as no strategy could of stopped that death.
How rare are ships with glaive beams?

Shields 3 stop Glaives in their tracks, Shield 2 would only allow it to do 1 dmg per room.
They're uncommon, not exactly rare. Worst offender decided to swing 2 Glaives and a Mini Beam at me, but i cloaked, recharged FTL and bugged out. I think it was Slug, they seem fond of beams.
- get a lvl 2 shield before anything else.
- get better engines to speed up FTL recharge (retreat).
- attack enemy weapons bay to limit his offense if you can.
