Bad Starts

Ouch.

I've been running through the game trying to unlock all the ships, my personal goal, and need to test pilot each one out. Having just gotten the Zoltan Layout B, the Noether, I proceed to launch the ship thinking the double ion guns are going to chew through the game, or at least the first few sectors. Probably enough time to get some shields, right?

1 jump. I make 1 jump before I run into a scout with an attack drone, missiles, and a beam. Should be a problem, I just need to target one ion cannon on the drone and the other on the weapons first and... both miss. Missile slams into my weapons. I proceed to fall apart on the first jump.

But, hey, I got that one out of my system. Next run should be better, right? Heh... heh... ah... :|

Sometimes that's just the way it goes. This game can be ridiculously mean when it wants to.

I was doing a test run of my Obsidian (see sig) right after getting the Singularity Projector working. First jump, I run into an auto-drone with an ion blast and a beam - and it has a drone-controller for a beam-drone as well. Bastard cut me up like a Thanksgiving turkey. Lousy luck, right? So I restart.

This time, the first jump is right into a supernova. Solar flares galore. And my enemy? A Zoltan ship. The one kind of ship I can't do jack against because my only weapon is a bomb, which don't pass through Z-shields. I facedesked hard enough, I think I still have RTYU embedded in my forehead. :roll:

Yes, this game can screw you at the start. I usually restart if:
- both shops are very close to the start point
- i get really screwed up in several first battles (as you described)
- i get an early "test your luck" event (like giant spiders or burning station or madman) and it ends in death of my crewmember

However, if you get past S1, usually you're set to win the game.

Damn.

I just got another start with the first jump being a Zoltan ship with a drone, missile launcher, and an ion cannon. I guess I shouldn't have named that ship RNG Murder Mach(ine).

EDIT: Huh. Apparently pics get the right 30% or so cropped off. That's a bummer.

Brutal. Just brutal. :shock:

My worst luck?
Try to start with a Stealth ship.
First jump? Shielded cruiser with beam weapon drone.
Stealth ship should probably have something more unique going for it.

My worst start 1st ever jump with the Engi B, took a laser through the shield room (witch I was wary of repairing because I had vented every room other than the cockpit) and then a missile flew in and caused a breach in the pilot room, next enemy shot destroyed the Drone room after that things ended predictably :oops: .
