Check out this similarly themed game from the 80s

Post by dnellis74 »

I was searching to see what people have been saying about the similarities beteen RPG/boardgame BattleStations and FTL when I discovered this game from the 80s that looks like it might have been a gem

It was popular enough to have two sequels but it looks like it was way more focused on ground combat than on space battles. At least from the screenshots.

I bet there are a lot of good ideas in there for an enterprising modder that could really flesh out the parts of the game where you leave the ship. Then again, maybe no one would want that part of the game to be more detailed.

Battlestations also has lots of good ideas. I for one would love to see sensors to be expanded to be more the science bay in Battlestations. You could jam missiles!

Hello there

I'm not sure how old you are, but yes, FTL is very, very 80's indeed. My computing teeth were cut in that decade on the zx80 (not 81) when i was a bright eyed 10 year old.

There are many games it draws it's inspiration from, and it's nice to see games getting away from the standard consolian dumbed down games. (even though FTL is simplistic, it can become complex).

There are many "classics" that come from (IMHO) the golden age of PC gamesand I'd like to see some of their aspects bought up to date. (Ahh, those flight sims with MASSIVE manuals)

Games like breach and Rebel Star (Laser squad to xcom etc) have great mechanics for boarding actions, but may be too tactical for some.

I'd love to see an addon that delivers just this aspect so those who don't like their turn based games could play as normal)

Never heard of Breach, but why not? Also, a good space-adventure game is escape velocity nova... It has an large world with multiple story paths you can follow and a variety of ships. The publishers charge 30 bucks for it, but it is an older game. I'd recommend talking to this pirate friend of mine who lives out in the Bay area..

The nice thing about FTL is that it's pretty much just an automated board game with really fun rules.

So unlike some games it isn't a great new technology, it's just a great set of rules, taking old concepts and providing a few new twists.

This game could have been made 20 years ago. But the unique combination of roguelike permadeath, choose your own adventure quests, and resource management just works together in a new way.
