invisible sector beacons, invisible enemies

Bought the game after seeing many positive reviews and feedback.

Unfortunately on entering the game i've hit 2 problems that both render the game unplayable:

no sector beacons:

after randomly clicking around the map i was able to warp on. but when i eventually got into combat i met another bug:

it doesn't render the enemy ship.

I've tried signing up for the beta build but the problems are still there.

Oddly, it seems like no one else is having this issue, as i've not seen any messages relating to these bugs.

PC stats:
windows7 64bit,
steam version of the game,
Radeon HD5800,
4 gig ram


If there's a fix for this that'd be great, otherwise I guess i'll have to dial up steam support for a refund

alright. so it turns out other people are having this problem. but more digging was required for find this out.
(found it via getsatisfaction.com/ftlgame )

perhaps it'd be a good idea to have this problem highlighted in a sticky or something so it's easier to find the solution?

anyway. the fix seems to be related to making a change to how catalyst drivers work for FTL:
