Budding Writers? Compose Your Own Event

Post by Corbotron »

I'm loving FTL. One of my favourite aspects of the game is the storytelling and the way the game provides a framework to explore well trodden sci-fi tropes in a different medium.

I was thinking that if FTL is to be expanded on at any point, it's likely that adding new stories and events would be a big part of that. It also struck me that composing these stories is precisely the kind of thing that a certain type of player who may be drawn to this game would be interested in.

This thread is for any budding scenario writers to share their ideas. Sorry if there's already a similar thread out there, I couldn't find it (sticky?).

To kick things off, here's one from me.

Brain Slug

This scenario plays out slightly differently to conventional ones as the full extent of it is not immediately obvious to the player. It is triggered when a seemingly friendly ship is encountered.

You encounter a ship who hails you. The crew appear to be friendly and ask to come aboard to propose a trade. Something about their tone strikes you as odd.

You have the choice to let them aboard or ignore them. If you choose the latter, the event ends.

You welcome the crew aboard. They appear wide eyed and crazy. They foam at the mouth. They are unarmed but proceed to attack, trying to rip your crew to pieces with their bare hands.

The player engages the boarders on their ship. They're unarmed so are easy to defeat. The player earns a small amount of scrap.

With his dying breath, the invading captain murmurs something about parasites and expires.

It appears at this point that the event has ended and the player jumps on to the next one, oblivious that it hasn't.

Over the next few turns, one of the crew members begins to move around the ship without instruction and will also be taking damage very slowly. The player will have to be vigilant to spot this. After this, rooms that the crew member has been in will mysteriously take damage as the result of sabotage. Finally, when the crew member's health is down to last quarter or so he will attack his crew mates during the next battle event. He will be easy to defeat but his death will leave the crew minus one member.

At any point during this process (after the first few turns have expired but prior to your crew member attacking the rest of your crew), the event can be ended by ordering the crew member to the medical bay, where he will be healed and the presence of an alien brain parasite will be discovered and removed.

You could use this thread instead: http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2847

Exspecially since I already explained the possibilities and limits of events there (f.e. the above event idea is simply impossible).

I saw that thread. It's not really the same thing as it's expressly stated that one shouldn't be posting the details of their events in there, which is the exact purpose of this thread.

Also, that thread is about a mod, whereas this thread is about proposing events for hypothetical future iterations of FTL. While the current framework may make it impossible for you to encode such an event as the one I suggested into your mod, the developers themselves have the potential to alter the framework itself. Therefore, this is far from impossible.
