Definitive Names Diversity Mod

Post by pistolshrimp »

Definitive Names Diversity Mod

Adds roughly 2,700 new names taken mostly from various sci-fi space themed universes.

The idea here is to make sure you don't see duplicate names in long runs, inc;uding those where the fleet has been turned off, and even re-runs. Also because we already have attachment to certain names it might add a little something to the randomly generated characters you meet throughout your journey. For instance you might be more likely to buy that crewmember named Yoda, or perhaps kill that enemy Jar Jar with a little more zest. Hopefully this will be part of a larger mod I'm working on, but as this can stand alone I'm posting it up here.

Some notes on this mod and its future:

*I've used only first or last names. In other words you may find a Luke in your journey but you will never find a Luke Skywalker. I did this on purpose, I feel the FTL universe should be kept relatively separate. Also I figured if you really wanted a Luke Skywalker you could name him that yourself.

*This mod's male to female ration is something like 35%. So basically you have a higher chance of getting a male crew member than a female one. Blame the sci-fi fiction industry for that one. Like the Equal Opportunity Mod that inspired this one, I intend to get closer to a 50-50 ratio in the future.

*Later, I would also like to add important sci-fi writers and possibly scientists' names.

*I'm not the biggest sci-fi nerd so there's a good chance I missed something quintessential. If you have a book, movie, show, comic, or whatever you suggestion should be added post it here or send me a pm. The one caveat I'd like to make is that I tried to keep things space opera/travel/colonization themed and generally avoided the alien invasion/astronaut themes unless they fit into one of the other themes. I feel that fits better with the premise of FTL.

Doesn't Captain's Edition have a metric butt-ton of diverse names from the various sci-fis you've referenced? I guess some people want the names, not the gameplay change though.

Speaking of which, why not names from the Xenoblade series (or the Xeno series but honestly I don't know anything about Xenosaga or Xenogears)? If you don't know any, a quick wiki search probably would come up with a couple or a hundred.
Xenoblade: Chronicles is a sci-fi game about a bunch of people living on a giant robot... probably not exactly what you're looking for in theme though.
Xenoblade: Chronicles X is about a city of Humans who fled Earth after being pursued by a bunch of unknown aliens and they end up stranded on a different planet. It's probably exactly the sort of thing you're looking for.

Might help with the male/female ratio too. Seriously there are a lot of characters beyond the protagonists. Especially Xenoblade: Chronicles where pretty much everyone you see wandering around or hanging out has a name (Like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion did too). Xenoblade X, not-so-much though. But there are some diverse alien species out there with some names you could use as well.

Thanks for the reply, Xenoblade: Chronicles X fits perfect, I'll add that in for the next update!

Some differences between C.E. Names.xml filre and mine:
1. Like you said just includes the names.xml nothing else, should therefore be compatable with most other mods.
2. The names are taken from specific familiar works of fiction with the sources listed.
3. There is over a 1000 more names in this mod and when I make the gender ration 50-50 it'll be close to 2000 more. So if C.E. has a metric butt-ton this has a metric butt-ton^2.

It's obviously not a huge difference, but I wanted to take their work a little further.

I see.
Now all I'm going to get are people named Elma, Lin and Lao... but then again it'd be hilarious to have those characters and they get affected by certain events that suit their character (like when I was playing a C&C mod as the Brotherhood of NOD and the guy named Seth betrayed me...)

Oh what about the series Lexx? It's about an organic spaceship that's single purpose is to destroy planets to eat... and well it gets stolen by a ragtag bunch of criminals (Stanley Tweedle, Xev Bellringer and Kai) and they traverse the universe(s) trying to survive. There's also a severed robot head that's programmed to love Xev unconditionally but I can't remember his name.
