A few quick tips:
When targeting the enemy ship, time your shots. You frequently let the Burst Laser be stopped by shields even though you made the right choice of targeting shields with your missile. Let the missile fly, then fire the BL2, when you know the missile will arrive first.
Dont rush straight for the exit. Criss cross the entire sector instead. You will find more goodies and enemies and have better equipment in the later sectors where the enemies are tougher.
Attack every ship you meet unless damaged heavily.
Use the pause during battles. Use it a lot. You cant see everything at once.
Power down the medbay when there are no wounded. You can use that extra power elsewhere.
Open the doors of an airless room to let fresh air in. It's faster than waiting for the lifesupport system to refill it.
Oh and try letting the Rocks pilot the ship. They are excellent for the job.
