I'd like to have access to the background art in FTL, is there anywhere this is easily accessible?

You can find more information in the Mod Development sub-forum. In particular, this tool should help you to unpack the data files of the game: http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1920 Inside, you will find the background art.

Note that the background art is copyright by the game developers, of course. While you can use it on your computer for your own personal use, you cannot redistribute it (or works derived from it) without the game developers' consent.

Man, I am just horrible with this stuff. I've downloaded probably 3 or 4 different programs and files and I still haven't gotten it to work with no indication why. Is there anywhere else I might be able to get them from?

What exactly is the problem? Have you followed the instructions in this topic? The first post describes how to use a windows installer and unpack the files.

When I run the installer that doesn't require python, it saves the files to a place on my computer that apparently doesn't exist (I follow the path displayed by the program and hit a dead end, the folder it's talking about just doesn't appear for some reason.) When I run python and try to enter the code described I get a whole host of errors; syntax errors, files and folders can't be found, random letters not being accepted as proper code.

Sounds like you are having this problem.

Look for Program Files\ftldat or Program Files(86)\ftldat - The files should be there (12 files total)

Press WinKey+R, type "cmd" and press Enter. A command window opens up.
The path will probably be C:\Users\*username*
Type:

Code: Select all

cd C:\<FTL folder path>\resources
and press enter. Then follow the unpacking or other instructions.
The <FTL folder path> is not the same on every computer, it should be in Program Files somewhere.

Ok so I have found the folder in my program files, what does WinKey+R mean?

Windows Key. Its in the lower left corner of your keyboard, with a Microsoft flag on it. Between Ctrl and Alt.

Press and hold that key and press R at the same time, then type "cmd" in the window that opens up. Press enter and follow the above.

Thank you for your help btw.

I've reached the command window which prompts me with C:Users/Username>, when I type the path to the FTL folder it just says that "program" is not recognized as an internal or external command.

The prompt is the beginning of the path right, or do I retype that part?

Also, the path to the FTL folder is the ftldat folder, correct?
