ok my friend here was playing ftl and he has it on stream that when he made 1 of his crew had no name and then when he restarted it gave his crew random names

I imagine it has something to do with how the naming works in the first place. If he wanted the crew member to stay unnamed, he may have wanted to gave the character a name that was just a single space or something, to prevent the game from trying to fill the space.

Don't know if that would work, but it would probably be worth a shot.
