So i've seen different posts, and decided this might be useful to some.

This is not about how to unlock the ship rather what to do with the B version.

This ship starts with 3 Crystal people, 4 weapon slots, Level 1 cloaking, level 1 shields, and a 4-person teleporter room. Note: This ship has no starting weapons.
It has a 4 room teleporter NEXT to a 4 room medibay

as for unlocking the B version see http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2695

General crystal people strategies.

special ablities traits:
- Reduced suffocation damage - very useful for repairing hull breaches.
- Lockdown power: Activated ability that coats the room they're in in crystals, preventing anyone from entering or leaving and making the room itself invincible to damage. The crystals wear off over time, or when attacked. This ability requires time to recharge after being used.
- Movement speed -20%
- Health 125

(from http://ftl.wikia.com/wiki/Races/Crew_Members)

When you use a crystal ship You don't need to find the pod and the lab to find the secret sector again, so if you go to the rock homeworld with this ship, you have a chance at popping into the secret sector again. This is both great in terms of final score (1 more sector) and in the weapons you can buy there at very cheap prices

Crystals are very useful for Boarding. Try to use all 3 'men' from the very start. Teleport to square rooms where you can take advantage of the numeric superiority

Do not Buy weapons immediately (just wait till u find one or buy one in the last sectors as you only really need em for the boss) instead focus on shields up to lvl 2 and a defence drone against missiles. You can also spam your stealth to avoid missiles

- Boarding strategy A:
teleport to enemy weapons room and use Lockdown ability immediately. with luck there was no crew in the room, allowing you to destroy the enemy weapons and finish the fight without receiving hull damage. Keep your stealth ability for the 1st enemy missile (ship B has stealth from start) and you may have use lockdown again to completely shut down enemy weapons. This strategy is best used against ships without a medibay or/and with missile weapons.

when fighting against ships with medibays or with damage you can mitigate with shields go for

Boarding strategy B:
Teleport in any room with 4 rooms with at least 3 crew members (3 crystals & mantis is ideally) press pause and use the lockdown ability to fight in numeric superiority. TBH with 125 health you will be able to kill off any crew even in a 3v3 or 4v4, particularly if u have atleast 1 mantis. You can always send the dude with the lowest health to another room to avoid his death or teleport out heal and then back in. Just remember to use lockdown before they run off to the medibay adn this is the best use you can make of this ability. This way you will kill crews much faster.

Ships with 2 crewmembers are frequent in the 1st 3 sectors which is good and most of them dont have medibays so the above strategy allows you to mitage a lot of damage and save up. Your first investments should be shields and a mark 1 defence drone.

Things to Be weary of (you will NOT be able to kill until you get a weapon):
automated ships
zoltan ships
ships with drones with beams.

EXEPTIONS/HOWEVER'S to the above rules:
- fights in ASTEROID FIELDS (zoltan shields will be taken down by meteors and automated ships can recieve hull dmg from them too)
- AUTOMATED SHIPS:thx to the ability "Reduced suffocation damage" you can teleport 2 crystals (dont send more - these ships tend to have only 2 square rooms and you will have to use your teleporter twice to recall your crew, u can only do this without waiting once the fight is over, but as automated ships dont have crew you are obliged to deal hull damage to win the fight) to the enemy weapons room they will survive long enough for your teleport (lvl 1) to recall them (usually 40% hp). You can wait a little more to try and take the weapons down completely.
This wont win you the fight, but it will reduce a lot of damage until your FTL is ready.

What works best with this strategy is to get level 2 shields and a defence drone up asap. no need of weapon, which you will only really need to kill the boss (as killing all the crew on it wont get u a win u have to smash the hull). You also wont need a mark 2 def. drone until the boss.

A final Note, when using the B ship the game often tends to award you a new crew member in sector 1 and I often have a full crew way before the boss without having to buy any. Only bother if you still dont have a mantis by sector 5.

Thats all I can think of for now
