suggestions for additional unlockable content - easy&soon

Ill try and be brief , but I do it against my nature so don't h8 me if I fail you on this...
mechanichs that keep the player intersted.
-highscore
-finishing the game
-unlocking content (ships)
Once you have unlocked all ships A & B its all about highscore, It would be nice to have more to look around for, finding the secret sector again after having already unlocked the ship is the most fun the game gets in term of exploring once youve done it all.
Here is a suggestion to add some variety without having to work too much for it. Maybe ina patch.

-im not suggesting alla warcaft 3 heroes. There is a quest in FTL where u can rescue a slug who claims to be a hero.
s0: Players could try to unlock special crewmembers, "heros" who might have already some level of skill as their "hero defining trait" or some "race-similar skill", something similar to the already existing race skills, but in addition to the race traits.
Here is how it could work: for each race a "hero" could be made to be available to unlock when starting a new game.
Hero's could be: alien races with different colour sets. For example, the crystal people hero could be red (like the ship B).
Proposals:
Crystal Hero: Red skin : normal crystal people skills + mantis combat skill
Mantis Hero: Blue skin: normal mantis skills + 25 additional health
Rock Hero: Black skin: norm rock skills + 20% speed
Engi Hero: green skin: norm engi skill + provides 1 energy to systems (like zoltan) - 40 health
Zoltan Hero: : yellow skin: norm zoltan skills + slug breach repair skill
Slug Hero: orange skin: norm slug skill + engi repair skill
Human hero: blond hair maybe?: human skills + mantis speed skill
what do you guys think? any1 like it?
it would require for a system to be implemented that alows to select special crew instead of the traditional crew, or just 1 or 2, but making the "heros" I dont think would take much time or am I mistaken?
