Don't pew-pew us, fearsome engiel of death!
This is the way you can make your every crewmember a close combat expert. Possible in any combat with no ai-piloted ship, just in the case if someone didn't know. Here is just one of the funny ways to do that:

Haha, that poor engi, he didn't know what to do.
Clever idea too level your crew up like that, but i don't know if many players would have the patience to do that.
(It is funny to watch though)

This will only really work well with Mantis, since they move faster than everyone else does, giving them more time to assault systems before they have to run again.
You can train piloting, engineering, and shields by finding a ship that can't penetrate your shields (e.g. armed with a heavy laser and a beam weapon, and you have level-2 shields), so I don't think that this is a huge deal. Heck, you can train weapons at the same time if you have at least one ion gun.
Bottom line is, if you really want to tediously grind yourself up to max-rank for the marginal extra capability, hey, go for it.

Nope, not only with mantis. It works even with rockmen, it's possible during any assault as i said in video description on youtube, you don't even need to take damage with your crew who not directly in combat. To do this, you need to split your forces between shields and weapon control and go on.

You can train
every skill and i didn't said it'a s huge deal. Actually, it's very easy to do with all the skills.

Correction. Real bottom line is, you don't need to "tediously grind yourself", you just need to launch FTL in window mode, properly upgrade your ship in sector 1, engage in battle and move your crewmen between ship sections time to time, while reading your favorite newspaper or watching youtube.
